[GUIDE] How To Properly Dampen Your Beyerdynamic T1

Yes it could very well be the felt I am using. But I was thinking of what you said about taming
the back wave behind the driver. So tonight when I got back home I tried this:
 
 

 
 
Right Below the center hole of the driver I put this half circle piece of felt. It stops the high
frequency waves from bouncing straight back into the Driver. It's probably what causes it
to peak. And so far I think this might be the best sound I have gotten so far. The T1 is a
lot more musical to me with a wider range of music.

I don't have the packaging for the felt I'm using. I had it from a previous project.
But it's about 1/8" inch thick.
 
Update: I made the semi circle a little longer so it extends to the openning in
             the middle. Definately smoother than before which I thought wasn't
             possible. I loved the T1's stock but they are definately blowing me away
             now.

after a few days of listening, I fear that i have overdampened my T1... on some songs it is good, on other's the sound is just off... Anyways i might be meeting up with some T1 owners in the next month, we could do a A-B with full mod, half mod and stock for now i'll try to gain as much as i can with full mod...

After a few listens to different music tonight I'm back to the smaller circle. With the longer one I fear the

Yeah getting it just right takes some tinkering. Different brands yield different results.

This is true. So far I'm pretty happy with the sound I've gotten. Hopefully some of the other T1 owners will post their findings here. We can't be the first to try this. It would be interesting to see what they've come up with.

This is very interesting and seems like a nice cheap mod and given the fact my warranty is long gone (balanced ftw) i'm going to give this a try. One question however when removing the drivers are there notches so that you can put them back in the exact same way? Let's see if i can source some good felt here in Europe. I'll let you guys know how it goes!

Yes there are. So it's pretty easy to do.

Yup, and what's best of all is the felt is cheap so if you don't like the outcome f the sound you can easily reverse the mod. 
 
I got my batch of Felt from Amazon in and it gave me the best sound yet! It's thin and easy to work with. I like it!

It seems the area that really changes the sound is right underneath that hole in the
back of the driver.
 
I've tried a few different sizes and thicknesses and different materials. So now I'm
really loving the smoothness of these cans. I'm sure I'll keep experimenting so I
will keep updating.

Looks like a nice cable. But I guess I would make sure it's a good copper first. Personally I would
only go with name that I would know. Especially for these cans.

That type of SPC is really stiff and has a lot of microphonic's. For the T1 I would recommend some type of copper cable. The T1 already has a really good cable on it, so you can't cheap out on this stuff now man! You don't have to spend a lot, maybe some OCC copper will be a good choice.
 
I see Toxic Cables offers OCC on ebay and it's fairly priced. Always worth a look my friend.
 
I also have a bunch of bulk wire if you need some. I have some OCC, SPC, and thicker Belden wire.

Here is an update to the dampening I have done to the T1
 
I still felt something was dampening the sound of the HP to much. So I decided that
underneath the driver hole I would try a thinner material than the felt I was using. So
the only thing I could think of that was like the felt but thinner was two pieces of tissue
paper cut into small squares. So I taped them in the area where the felt was. And
Viola! It's not the most elegant method I know. But ultimately it's the sound that I really
care about.
 
I think this has gotten the siblance under contol without sacrificing the clarity of the T1.
