Grado PS-1...Wow!

I agree. Since most are agreeing that the HP-1000's or PS-1's are the "best" then that is the starting point and we collective agree on certain aspects that should be highlighted or dealt with. Then on to construction. I really like the screws, I'd vote hard with my dollar for those and maybe some foamies as well as pads that are made of some other material...leather or mmmm that soft velour that the Sony MDR-F1's use.

Would it be better to talk to Todd first? Surely someone will be needed to distribute the product?

Todd would be the top choice in my mind. He brought us the HF-1's and PS-1's and flats! No doubt he is our point of sales man, but before that even, I figure just getting a feel from the members is important first.

No offence, but shouldn't the poll only include the options for interested folk? Those not interested at all can just not participate. I'm also concerned about a potentially large number of people willing to pay too much. We have to set some limits and conditions. In other words, I think only options 3, 4 and 5 are viable.

Not really, I'm also accounting the ratio of people reading the thread, people casting their vote and people that have insterest in new High-end phones but wouldn't risk their money advancedly. These votes would tell the size of the potential market if the phones are finally made and they sound good.

As for now it's quite disappointing, many reads, few votes and still less people who would risk their dough. Most of them in the 1000-1500 range. Let's see how it shapes in the next days/weeks, but I'm afraid, as I was expecting, that there's not as much market for expensive HE cans as the high prices of the vintage ones seem to suggest.

Well just a thought, in place of aluminum alloy (PS1 & HP1k) or mahogany (RS & GS), perhaps materials that are actually found in musical instruments be used for its acoustic chamber. Brass or bronze as often utilized for wind instruments, or bonded plies of maple or rosewood which are meticulously applied on string instruments. Sort of like Sonus Faber's approach to speaker cabinet construction on their Homage series, where they try to emulate the method used by master luthiers.

What % of Head-Fi'ers own headphones whose retail value exceeds $1500? Maybe 5%? More people own a variety of cans whose value adds up to that. They save and buy as they can afford to. That's why only having options 3,4 & 5 would give a more accurate total of who's in and what they're willing to pay. Also consider that it's still a dream and we're voting on nothing right now, there's no headphone (yet). If there was something built and people got to hear it or heard good opinions on it, more would want in on it.

My point setting up the poll as I've done it is knowing:

a) How many people would be interested in HE cans disregarding if they'd pay for advanced a "who knows" product, so we'd need to know the "I'm interested but I can't pay for advanced". The total people interested in new HE cans would be known by adding those replying option #2 plus 3, 4, 5, and 6. You could even add the ones replying #7 if the cans are a success and become a cult release.

b) We still don't know the price range we'd be facing, but knowing that some people would pay over 2500 is also interesting. Imagine they become the majority... IMHO is not the same approaching a manufacturer saying "we have 100 people willing to invest >2500 for the best cans you can design", than going there with something like "we have 100 potential interested members, but you'd better offer something at 1000 USD since 90% of them is the most that they'd invest".

The idea behind the poll as I designed it is getting as much information as we can to approach any manufacturer about the potential market, the sure market, and the price bracket things should be into.

Hey, that's a good idea. I was thinking Grenadilla, like what clarinets are built with.

Are there really enough moving/vibrating parts in headphones to notice a difference in various woods?

I've had a few headphones made by larry with different woods, and although they look beautiful the differences between them are really not noticeable.

Barking up the wrong tree..? :P Most likely depends on the thinness of wood and the size of the cavity to better allow it to resonate. Or maybe that's a bad thing.
