I feel ignorant :/

I took a break from the Head-Fi community for a while and not only has a new Grado revision been announced, but also RELEASED. I won't have some money for a while, but I have the irreconcilable urge to go out and buy some SR80e's just to test the difference.

From what I gathered, there are very slight differences, and that you are better off buying a pair of discounted SR80i's :). Savings here in Montreal are about 30$ off on the headphones.

I've been needing some porta-Grados recently, so if I can find some SR80i's on sale I'll get them instead.

different power requirements for the PS500 driver. PS500 requires way less power than HF2 and other Grados (see innerfidelity PS500 measurements) and the bass tuning of the PS500 is for bigger bass than the HF2.

Does the HF2 resemble any Grado headphone, or is it something totally different than the signature sound?

MH and I have both mentioned this in the last few pages, I think. It’s the baseline for the PS500. it’s very similar to the PS500

to go into slightly more detail:

The PS500 took the darker HF2 sound (and the HF2 build: wood sleeves, aluminum cups) and added even more bass, clearer imaging/soundstage and (from my impressions listening to the two) less shoutiness for female vocals.

"Bass monster" is a little extreme, but I did find that the bass emphasis, made female voices sound a bit too "chesty " for my taste.

Although I've never hear the 225's which many love, I do own the 325is's, and they are an awesome headphone for $295.00, along with the 80i's…just my opinion that you are experiencing Grados craftsmanship/sound signature with these models also, just not the wooden cups… besides they all have thier own unique sounds.

You can't be hanging out in HeadFi and couldn't tell the difference between the SR series and the RS series.

I like the 325s better than RS series. Have you ever owned any Grados? None are listed in your profile.

The more I read about the PS500e in this thread, the more it appears
to be almost a "bass monster"...would anyone here characterize it
in that way?

As far as grados go its a bass monster but compared to a lot of other headphones it would be considered bass light. The typical grado headphone is fairly light in the bass department and emphasized in the highs. The ps500 has less emphasis in the highs and more in the bass, some might even say its a more balanced sound.

I have not tried the PS500e, I have the PS500, and compared to the RS1i's, they are noticeably more bass heavy, but they do not eat up the rest of the higher frequencies, so I would not call them a "bass monster". Though I do enjoy them a lot of electronic/chill/downtempo/triphop. The PS500 also pairs very well with the RA-1 amp.

+1, PS500 for me, has punchy, controlled, deep bass that isn't bloated. Quite satisfying, if not perfectly accurate.
Not a monster by any measure. imho. I won't even try the 500e, as I am very happy with my 2-yr old 500.spend the dough on music.
