how might the 580's playback some prog metal and rock? I listen to prog genres more than bassier tracks but I do get alot of songs with bass on.. I know they probably arent as bright as my SR80s I sold recently

Denon Ah D1100. It's $150 off Amazon right now. The bass is amazing. Unlike the Beats, the bass is more punchy and more accurate. But that doesn't make the impact and sound any less beautiful if you love bass. The highs and mids are very crisp and clear. Listening to my music, I'm hearing details that I've never heard before on my $40 sennheisers. I would highly recommend these. I guarantee you they are better than the Beats in just about everything there is to be better at.

For a comparison I have heard the DT 770 Pros and I prefer the Denons personally. The 770 pros have the beyerdynamic laid back sound with recessed mids. The Denon is more forward sounding and I like the bass better personally. I don't know how to describe it, but I feel the bass more in the Denons. The Denons is warmer and more colorful than the 770 Pros and they work better without an amp.

A thing to note, don't try running the Denons off an iPod nano. My nano cannot power it. It's like asking a 15 year old to be a marine. It's not gonna be enough. The sound quality was terrible off my nano. Plugging it into my computer, it's much better.

I second that vote for the D1100s, I love them. I have the XB700 and have also owned the DT770 pro 80s. I much prefer my D1100s over the other 2, they're just much more clean sounding, with just as much bass as the XB700s, which is alot.

Your comparison and shorty920's comparison completely contradict from each other based on my experience with the XB700. I haven't tried the d1100. XB700s have ridiculous bass. They literally can blur my vision.

DT770/80
M50
XB700

DT770/80 work well with unamped and have extremely strong bass and its cheaper than the beats.
not to mention more comfortable too, but it have slightly recessed mids and a bit harsh treble

M50 is flatter response and have punchy bass but isnt as strong as DT770..

both go extremely well unamped,

It's going for $140 now! I just picked one up and am eagerly awaiting their arrival! Really sweet and balanced sound, with a big tight bass! :)

Why do they contradict? He said it's more clean sounding and just as much bass.

I have never heard the XB700 and don't have any other bass heavy cans other than the DT 770 pros for comparison so I don't know what you mean. I am a basshead in that I do not mind too much bass, but I do mind not enough bass. The D1100 satisfies my bass need very well and like Slickman said, they are very clean sounding. The sound is very crisp and detailed. I've never used a monitor headphone so I don't know how much the bass is, but on songs with instruments, I do notice the bass instruments getting way overemphasized. They are wonderful for rap and hip-hops. Vocals and the beat are absolutely fantastic. I have been listening for over 4 hours now :). My only complaint is that the speaker rotator on the left squeaks when I turn it. Very annoying!
