Fostex TH900 Impressions & Discussion Thread

Listen to any song with prominent bass instrumentals (no need for pure basshead songs).
The TH900 will thump/rattle your head along with those notes when they come up, while the HD800 will give you nothing.

Its a very pleasant experience & one that gave me the wow factor.

Also if you haven't tried it yet, the shelf liner mode does help bring the TH900 very close to the HD800 in sound signature minus the thin bass of course.

I hear you, although I disagree on the HD800 giving "nothing". As prosaic as it sounds, I have to throw it out there that you haven't heard the Sennheiser's out of a synergistic setup. The bass is punchy, fast, tight and best of all articulate. Thankfully, the TH900 has not rattled my brain, though it has thumped a bit. I actually think the bass is tastefully done, which was an area I loathed with both the D5000/D7000.

In some ways the TH900 reminds me of the SR007 (though the Stax is less V shaped, more bloom in the bass, and ultimately sweeter sounding and more articulate). I'll keep plugging along until I find the right tube for the Fostex. Thankfully my wife enjoys them a great deal and is fond of their presentation for movies.

Had anyone here upgraded from a Denon D5000 to TH600 or a TH900? What would be the most apparent improvement (if there's any)? Is the TH900 considerably warmer than the TH600? It looks absolutely gorgeous but it's so expensive... So if the TH600 is just a little bit inferior, I would buy those. Is 1150 USD a good price for them?

Why not go on the forums and scoop a used pair for $800-$900? When you consider that you can buy a used HD800 & HD650 for $1150 or thereabouts (those two cover all genres), I wouldn't call it a great value. At the used price they are a nice find and considerably better than the Denon line.

I live in Europe and it's quite hard to find a pair here, even new. What are the main improvements? Right now I have a Denon D5000 and Sennheiser HD600 and I would need to sell both to afford the TH900. So I guess it wouldn't be nice deal.
If somebody wants to sell his/her TH900 inside the EU around 750 euro don't hesitate to PM me!

Bear in mind that this is going on memory and I have not owned the D5000 since circa 2012-13. The TH900 has superior resolution and perhaps considerably superior compared to the Denon's. The staging is more expansive and the locality is improved. In other words the cues needed to form an image is sharper and more focused on the TH900. The treble is clearer and more finely woven into the signature than the Denon's, which I remember as strident and splashy. The bass, which I personally found unbearable (as in physically painful) in the D5000, is tighter and more articulate on the Fostex. The sloppy, "boomy" bass that bled exhaustively into the midrange is replaced with a tasteful, almost lavish warmth that keeps sufficient distance from the rest of the frequency. To keep this short, I'll say the TH900 improves upon every category that audio nuts are enthusiastic about. Unless your thing is grevious, thumping bass -- there really isn't much that speaks in favor of the D5000.

As for the HD600, you might want to ask someone else for an opinion. I say this for two reasons: the first is that I haven't heard a pair in years. The second reason is that I have a particular soft-spot for the HD6xx line. The HD650, for a time, provided the most mirthful experience I had with headphones. It was penultimate as a companionable headphone. Paired especially with the Zana Deux there was little left to crave. The Sennheisers scale distinctly well and to this day I don't know if there are limits to its ascention. So, I'm obviously very partisan here and my advice ultimately would be to burn the D5000 (SELL IT DON'T DAWDLE) and keep the HD600. Figure out a way. Then when that is done, take the next 12 months and save every penny for a Zana Deux. You'll have a setup that notably works well with both headphones and in the case of the Sennheiser at least, a setup worthy of a czar.

Would the TH600 be a nice "budget" option instead of the TH900?

If you like the TH900 I don't think you'll be disappointed with the TH600 if youre looking to safe on your budget. Some even prefer it over the 900.

Who knows where to get replacement pads for the TH900?

How do you guys clean the sweat/sebum off your TH-900 earpads and headband?

I'm using a screen cleaner without alcohol.

Works for me to.  A good old fashioned (dry) anti static cloth gently after every 2nd / 3rd use.
