Fostex TH600 Dynamic Headphones
Apr 13, 2013 at 1:50 AM Post #511 of 3,438
Who says that the Denons were bad in stock form? I have a stock D7000 and in the right context love its sound. I also have Stax Omega 2 mk 1, ALO Edition 9, Grado GS1000 with Jenalab cables, HD800 with Cardas cables, Sig Pro, T1, T5p and others. Each headphone has its strengths. The only headphone I have which I hardly ever use is my Ultrasone Pro 900.

Sorry, that all sounds a bit excessive, but I have bought them all new over the years and recording sound balances vary so much that I have found that I use all of my headphones in one place or another (and I have a few alternative sources and amplifiers).

Having said that, the Denon D7000 was the best of the Denons, and I suspect that the 600 Fostex will not quite match the 900, no matter what the source.

Apologies for posting this without having heard either the 900 or the 600.

I'd still love to see some formal review comparing them against Lawton modded D5K or D7K with Angle Pads, we all know that old Denon/Fostex were pretty lacking in a stock form so beating them up is not such a big feat.

I know this isn't the exact comparison you were asking for but I owned a TH900 and now have a markl modded MD7000 (stock cups and cable).

The TH900 has cleaner bass and a more open sounding soundstage but the overall bass boost on the TH900 is higher than on the Md7000 so the effect is that the mids on the fostex sound more recessed than on the modified denon. I actually prefer the frequency balance of the MD7000 more than the TH900 even thought I can recognize the better technical capabilities of the fostex.

Treble is smoother on the TH900, too. It's still slightly sibilant on the MD7000 in comparison. Still, the md7000 is one of the best headphones I've ever owned. I wouldn't pay 2 grand for one new with the fancy cable but for around the 1G mark, it's, IMO, a better buy than the TH900. I'd love to hear the TH600 to compare.

This is the comparison I've been looking for.  I'm on the fence on getting my D7000s MarkL'ed.  Sounds like it may be a good gamble.

If you're even a little bit handy, doing it yourself is surprisingly easy (especially if you don't do the white baffle part with the holes, which Mark doesn't do any longer for the D7000's anyways). Everything I touch breaks, but I was able to do the full mod fairly easily (even the white baffle).
Removing it would be harder, but definitely possible with some care.

Go for it, Mark has very nice guide.

This thread with templates should help too

D5K bass was really all over the board before the mod, now after mod and with angle pads I find them quite enjoyable and balanced.

THe sound is smashingly better than the older Denons. It is addictive in every area. Sure, there are a few rough edges, but I don't think there is a headphone at any price that does everything perfectly. Certainly not in my experience. The TH600 is making me re-think my love of Beyerdynamic T1/5. Comfort and built don't compare to the German cans, but sound wise... these are killer headphones.

As an (apparently rare) fellow T5p lover, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on how they compare to the TH600 if you have the time and inclination!

Can anyone tell me how much the TH600 really is?

I am very confused about the pricing.

The actual MSRP of the headphones, I believe, is $1299. But the best place to buy these headphones is PriceJapan.com. They use Yen, as their primary currency, so all orders are converted from Yen to your respected currency. In the states, you can buy the TH-600 new for $861 + S&H right now.

So it really is $1299. I thought I saw the msrp at $1699 somewhere.

I was curious to know since I saw it for $800 w/o shipping and other fees.

Can the TH600 be a lot better than the D7000?

I can not comment because I haven't heard them, but from the earlier reviews from people that compared the two, they liked it better. Scroll through the thread, and you will find some impressions.

Looks that way but of course it's purely subjective. The TH600's are said to be a lot more neutral with cleaner tighter bass but still a pretty fun can. I've also heard that for under $1000 they are far and away the best closed cans you can buy. Better sub bass than the Audio Technica's (3000 and 5000) and not a total joke like the new soon to be in the Walmart bargain bin Denon D7100's...

Thanks,

Correct, they have much better sound isolation than the TH600 or TH900. The Signature Line and Signature DJ's are no joke! Definitely some of the best in the world!!
