I'm not even a week into ownership of my Utopias and I can tell the stock cables aren't going to last long in my system. They're big, heavy and catch on everything.
I think I'm a little spoiled by the Moon Silver Dragon's I use on my LCD-3's.

My experience as well.

MassDrop is doing the Nordost Heimdall 2 for the Utopia for $529.99. 2m in length. 4-pin XLR amp termination with adapters to 3.5mm & 1/4 inch SE.
Extensions and other adapters available.
https://www.massdrop.com/buy/nordost-headphone-cable-heimdall-2
Expected ship date is April 16
Nice that they're not boosting the price for Utopia vs other cans.

I really wonder how "great" of a deal that is. Check out some of the dealers who participate on this thread. I seem to recall they are quite near the MassDrop price.
IMHO, even if they are a bit more expensive, it is worth it for the customer service, after purchase support, and the fact that you do not have to wait until April for these.
Sometimes penny wise pound foolish

Yeah not that great a deal.
Though IMO the Heimdall is major sonic improvement over the stock cable. Very light weight too. Not visually impressive though, if that matters.

I don’t ever think $550 for any type of Copper cables is a good deal. OFC Copper isn’t gold ! Anyways, I recommend you to just pick up a soldering iron, do some YouTube and google videos. Practice, and start DIY. Cables isn’t rocket science.

Now, exotic materials is different, and could be very expensive, but still, you would still save a hell lot of money if you start DIY on cables, period. The main secret recipe is in the materials. Soldering isn’t any new technology that you should be paying an astrocity pricing for.

Yes, there are differences in soldering that can affect the quality. But it is negligible on cables. You would be surprised by how lousy some “upgraded cables” solder joins are. Again, if you are that enthusiastic, pick up the iron, practice, perfect your techniques, and bring the satisfaction to the acceptable level to your own. It is not rocket sciences!

If it’s JUST copper and connectors I’d agree. There advantages to the wire if it’s a good design even if it’s copper.

Don't mean to start a cable argument, genuinely curious, has anyone ever put out scientifically backed, objective evidence that proves a better construction or material makes a difference in the end? I understand we can't measure everything we hear, but if these sonic improvements are so obvious, shouldn't they show up in some sort of objective measurement somewhere?

I can get behind the price for labor (if the cables are wrapped and braided), otherwise it's just cutting/stripping/soldering, that's a $12/hr job.

The cables being sold by Massdrop are 1st run with a divider clip at the split. They are not what Nordost sells to dealers for people to purchase.

If you say so

I've gained a greater appreciation for cable manufacturers from making my own. Even at the minimum wage rate, by the time I've hand-braided and soldered everything, I'm probably close to the total cost of a Kimber Axios cable. It's not a 5 min job. Not for me, at any rate. (My own effort is on the right.)
