Focal Elegia - what do you think?

How is your commute with these? Between the crap weather and managing a (crap) cable along with my messenger bag, I'm way too scared to try it.

I also got mine last week. I go back and forth on the sound. I listen to more rock and metal stuff, particularly 80s metal, and most of that stuff sounds nasally and thin anyway. And I use Google Music at work because our streaming options here are limited. But I had a real sublime moment listening to Queen's A Day at the Races the other day through a Dragonfly Red on my home laptop. Some songs remind me that I'm listening to a closed back pair (I come from the HD650). But others give me the sense of space I came to love with the 650s.

Good question... but not for me.
My transit system is way too loud (at times, 80-90db) so these don't exactly cut it. If you're on a civilized system, I suppose they'd be very nice... but with a better cable than either of the ones I have. The Black Dragon is actually worse than the original in terms of stiffness. It's like a freakin' hanger.
The 'closed' aspect is actually what I'm more used to, so it has no negative impact for me. The 'nasal' quality bugs me a lot... so these need to be for DAP use only, where that's mitigated to almost-gone.

So the Elegias sound pretty unremarkable through the iPhone dongle. Are there any DAP recommendations? Cowon Plenue D2 seems to get a lot of love for its sound quality, but Tidal streaming would be a nice option to have. Could I use PD2 as an external DAC with iPhone?

When I went to the headphone specialist here in Holland I listened to the Elegia on a Fiio M11, not the pro.
I was surprised about the combination.
To me it was the reason to buy the M11 and save money for the Elegia.
For now I use a B&W P7. Also very nice.
But, I still do ‘need’ the Focal!
Good luck.

Didn’t go for the last deal I found but seeing them again at almost 40% off...yet I’m torn still. They seem like they sound amazing but I’m not sure if their signature would suit me...I’ve heard these described as thin and I don’t really like thin sound. I listen to a lot of rock/metal/punk, and some pop, jazz and hip hop.

I tried them with jazz, mahler and new model army etc.
Very impressed.
Euhhh, that deal was in europe?

I got a pair from EasyLounge for 630€ during black friday. Really enjoying them, but it takes a bit to get used to the sound signature after listening to TH900s for five years.

Personally I think any vocal centric track these shine on. Maybe not the best for rap or EDM or metal. But when the recording is stellar these shine. So it really comes down to the recording. Which can be said for any speaker or headphones but the recording does come through very detailed

Thank you. I might wait for now. I just got a new closed can 2 and a half months ago and I’m getting ER4XR soon. I should probably give those a fair shake first.

My Artic Cable arrived yesterday. I purchased from ebay on Dec 2--so 11 days for delivery.
I ordered the 4 wire--cost of $ 95 with tax--the 8 wire was going to be about $ 140------
1.5 m with 4.4mm TRRRS Pentaconn Balanced.
It came with a nice travel bag and warranty card--LIFETIME warranty so you really cannot go wrong.

The cable is fantastic! Beautiful high quality materials---as the website advertised-
" Durable, soft, low microphonics cable sleeves with excellent flexibility and comfort"
Totally pliable and very comfortable feeling. Could not be happier with the build quality and feel of it.

The stock cable is 3.5 unbalanced and my new cable is 4.4 balanced--
As far as sound quality I honestly cannot give a fair comparison to the stock cable with the 3.5 unbalanced connection.
Obviously the 4.4 balanced Artic cable is going to sound much better--the balanced output is so much better.

I plugged into my new Cayin N6II and LOVED what I was hearing--really kicked up the bass and was more resolving and detailed.
I went with the 4 wire to keep cost down---the 8 wire was going to be $ 45 more.

The Elegia purchase was totally impulse on ebay--I saw it advertised as $ 520 open box and bid $ 450---
thinking the seller would reject my offer. I sent the offer and then thought to myself-
what the hell are you doing? I went to withdraw the bid literally 5 minutes after sending it and could not retract
because the seller accepted my offer! I figured--F it---lets enjoy these things.

The cable is excellent and I am very happy with the purchase--I may upgrade a couple more cables with this company.
I used Moon Audio once for a Silver Dragon 2.5 balanced cable for my now sold Fostex TH 900--cost of $ 250.
The cable was so stiff and rigid, totally uncomfortable to use and the connection became loose a couple of months later. Blah!
Artic Cable has a lifetime warranty--how can you go wrong?

My only regret is that I did not get the 8 wire--but given the purchase situation I went with the lower cost.

I tried Elegia, it sounded extremely bad from my phone's headphone jack. Ever music sounded like 128 kbps mp3. But I guess it sounds way better with amplification

I had similar experience. Sounds good out of my desktop rig, though. I bought a used A&K SR15 and hope it will do the trick for office use.

I tried the Elegia from a chord Mojo connected to my phone. Sounded great to me, a step up from my B&W P9s in every way Bass was tighter more textured, soundstage was wider, more detail in the mid-range. Does using a balanced cable really make that much of a difference? The Chord Mojo has no balanced output, but does it need to be if the internal electronics are good?
