Focal Elear - Impressions Thread

No worries man, just wanted to clarify before things got heated :) stuff like this can be a sensitive topic :p
Same, and yes, sometimes even the most innocent of comments can start a chain reaction. Glad that didn't happen in this case. I see you are in Norway, certainly a country I intend to visit, although it looks like my girlfriend wants to see Iceland first.

Lots of beautiful nature in both countries :) Also, while there isn't a lot of head-fiers in Norway, Oslo has a nice hi-fi store called Oslo Hi-Fi center. They've got most of the flaships (including sr-009, susvara, lcd-4 etc) and lots more.

There is so much subjectivity with the Elear let alone all headfi topics... The biggest questions that should be thought about should be- (my opinion of course!!)
"Have you had your hearing tested? or, how old are your ears?"
"What headphones have you heard in the past to be able to compare to the Elear?"
"What sound signature do YOU ultimately prefer?"

I feel like these 3 questions can explain A LOT to what people say about a headphone and therefore the take away from it. Granted it could take a while to explain all that ha. Tyll's impression of a headphone is different then a ton of peoples. But knowing what Tyll ultimately appreciates can greatly help someone choose for them self.

Great point Craig! However, no matter what you, Tyll, or I or anyone else says regarding how good elear sounds to those who truly enjoy the headphone, there will be a corresponding amount of those who don't. The most you can hope for when we participate in these forums and post a positive opinion regarding select equipment is to encourage those who MAY be open minded enough to try said equipment and make up their own mind, using their ears, their eyes and their brains. For those who don't feel the Elear (or any other equipment for that matter) is to their liking, no amount of conditioned impression (EG- is it your old ears? bad cable, crappy amp, or abysmal music choice) suggested will make so much as a flea's weight on an elephant's ass to them. Their brain has severed that synapse and continued encouragement will not be an effective endeavor. In their defense, they are also only offering what they feel is their opinion. It is then dependent on my own synapses to remain open or to snap shut. What I personally have learned is to keep an eye on the forums to know what is new and exciting, look for trends in how the equipment holds up to use and ease of use, and ultimately, what my ears say. I have said this in the past and I will say it again, making a $1000 decision on a headphone should be up to YOUR ears. I really really don't suggest that trusting someone with a nic of "FRIGGINLOONY" have much weight in that 1K decision.

I don't know if what I said was misunderstood or not after that.

To clarify- if you don't like something after hearing it,that is obviously fine and feel free to express that. I was stating reasons for how people can express "like" and "dislike" equally btw.

Using descriptors on why "one thing is better then another" is more quantifiable when people get more of a picture.

I personally went back and forth with the Elear on whether I liked it. Hearing as many different cans at will makes it that way I think...

Did you know almost all Focal Utopia/Elear dealers are providing these sales prices?

It's a Factory Authorized Sale not exclusive to any one particular reseller.

When I sold my Elears they took a month to sell, even though I put the price pretty low. Perhaps this is a sign that the hype is dying down.
Huh, they seem to be pretty hot in Norway still. Sold mine for 800$ ish (currencies and all) which is the normal 2nd hand price here, sold after one day. Never seen any stay on the used market for over two weeks.

:D

It's not about a new model coming out. I'm sure that will happen at some point (not anytime soon) it's about doing something meaningful and get more of the Focal brand in people's lives.

You guys are missing the point. Think about where your trade-in is going. They are dropping MAP for a month, giving the consumer a much better opportunity to buy and giving your old headphones to a charity that would appreciate having them. Did they say your trade in needs to be a $500 value? $400? $200? $100? NO! They said clean, complete and fully operational. Doesn't sound like much to me. I bet you have something in your dresser draw that qualifies. You just have to remember which draw you stuck it in 3 years ago when you decided to move on from them. :)

agree...allowing the less fortunate to turn on to better sound is a win win on both sides.

how does elear sound w/ an OTL amp? bad match i assume?

My Elears are a fantastic match with my Feliks Euphoria and Elise. The Beyer T1s (600 ohms) don't get any playing time at all.
