It is a faulty unit I have.  

    so i must send it back for an replacement  ( it looks like it costs 42 dollar for the shipping to HK for me. ) , typically when i had been looking forward to this Fire Phoneix Dac-02.
 
- But with a faulty light
- Imbalance between channels
- Noice in the left channel
 
I need sending it back ( 42 dollar for shipping to HK ..  is it worth it? ) and i need to wait several weeks for a new.

 
Sorry to hear that, the ebay listing currently says "[size=10pt]12 Months Warranty from the date of purchase, No need buyer pay any extra fees to pay for warranty!".[/size]
 
[size=10pt]There should have been quality control performed by the manufacturer and ebay seller, you know to check it works, your unit was I think what they call "dead on arrival", ask for them to cover the return shipping, and make sure you start a paypal claim if necessary within the 6 week cut-off frame if I recall correctly.[/size]

I also have 2 questions, the first one is @kiteki: The replacement chips you mentioned earlier, what do they improve, the DAC-part or the headphones amp-part, or both?
 
Second question is if it would serve any use, on a machine with a Realtek HD audiochip (on Windows XP), to install ASIO-drivers as some recommend?

 
The JRC4556 chip is for the headphone amp, so if you replace that with one of the classics like AD797 or OPA627 that'll [potentially] improve (only) the headphone amp section.
 
I'm not quite certain on the LM4562 chip, try removing both the JRC4556 and LM4562 chips and then using the line-out (the red/white RCA at the back) to your external amp - if there is no difference at all then both chips are for the headphone amp section, then if that's the case I think I'd leave LM4562 as it is and only replace the JRC4556 chip.  4556 may perform nicely though I haven't received any joy from it IME compared to other alternatives.  JRC themselves would recommend MUSES8920 or MUSES8820 for higher fidelity audio applications.
 
If hesitant the only component you'll potentially burn via replacements is the chip itself, i.e. not the rest of the DAC.
 
As for the $5000 DAC's well the short answer is I'm sure there are some $5000 blu-ray players out there too.
 
As for ASIO drivers yes I'd recommend installing something like Asio4All, you can also try Kernel streaming, you never quite know what is happening at the code and electron level so it's best to experiment.

I just received my Fire Phoenix DAC-05 today. I plugged in the USB, but the device isn't recognizing that the usb is on. Is something wrong?

Not saying I'm not doing the same. The Fire Phoenix I ordered is a present for my son. I'll have to make certain it works first

try with another cable , another usb port or on another pc/laptop.

I just figured it out. I thought the unit automatically detected inputs. I was fiddling around with it and realized the volume knob was a button too and that was used to change inputs.

How they sound? New DACs need a burn in. Might sound a little on the bright side as first.

It sounds good so far. I was using just my laptop to drive the 600 ohm beyerdynamic dt 880 before this arrived. With the dac-05, the bass extends deeper and instrument separation is better. I'm hoping the brightness settles down, it's a little bright for my taste right now.

Ya I would just let some music play though your entire system for several hours. Maybe even over night. It should settle

Hi kiteki, my unit was definitely "dead on arrival", when i turned it on and chose OPT there was no blue light on. then when i listened for the first time it sound weird but I could not put my finger on what it was. then after further testing i concluded that there was an imbalance between the channels and the noise + less bass in the left channel.
 
ebay listing also say:

[size=10pt]Ø   [/size][size=10pt]Buyer is responsible for the return shipping fee.[/size]
 
My unit was faulty so i just paid for shipping and send it back and hope it will arrive to it.box. He will inform me when it has arrived. I just hope it arrives so it not just disappear. 

but I'll ask him about the return shipping next time.

I agree with you that he should test it before shipping and hope he does so in the future. I hope i get a donut next time.

It seems that the whole unit can get very hot, so hope the sound also gets very hot. I look forward to your impression.
