I must be hallucinating then. I just connected my DAC-02 to one of my USB3 ports (HP Pavilion HPE H8-1240t /Windows 7) (with a USB2 cable fwiw) and it is playing back fine !

My USB2 external drives all work fine on USB3 ports

YMMV of course !

That's good to hear, because I'm still looking for a dac/amp with variable line out  Here is the ebay ad that I responded to:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/FIRE-PHOENIX-DAC-05-OPA2604-CS3310-CS4398-192K-24BIT-USB-DAC-Headphone-Amplifier-/380468008371

I asked the seller  (in regard to either dac)  1) if the dac was compatible with a USB 3.0 port on a late 2012 iMac, 2) if the volume knob controls the line out volume level  and 3) the differences between the DAC-02 and DAC-05.

The response was that "1. the DAC are only USB 2.0 port", "2. DAC volume control is in earphone", and 3. the two DACs have different chips. I quoted a couple of passages from the reply because I thought I might be misunderstanding them.  In any case, what I took away from the reply was that the DAC won't work with my iMac's USB3 ports and the volume knob does not affect the volume of the line-out. Is that incorrect? Did you purchase from a different seller?  I'd love for this unit to work on my iMac, because it's under my budget and the reviews sound great.

I purchased mine from it.box http://www.ebay.com/usr/it.box

Mine is the DAC-02 so may be different. On mine the volume control DOES alter the line-out volume as well as the headphone volume !

They both however use the same USB receiver (CM102) according to specs

Of course I cannot guarantee how it would work with a mac !

Reviving this thread if it's okay...

I'm looking for a decent Headphone AMP with Line-Outs/Pre-Outs like DAC 02 / DAC 05 and E09K with similar price range. This thread is already 1 year old and checking to see if there are new good products were released out there.

It will be used on my current HP's HD681 EVO and Q701 and for my future setup on amplified 2.0 speakers.

My objective is to use a headphone amp/Line-out combo for simple connectivity.

Below AMP's that I've recently checked:
1. Fiio E09K
2. Monoprice Desktop AMP
3. DAC 02 (ebay)
4. DAC 05 (ebay)
5. LME49720+TE7022+ES9023 headphone desktop AMP (ebay)
6. SMSL SD-793II (ebay)
