@Sonic Defender
Isn't that headphone just a tweaked Beyerdynamic T1? I thought I had read that and if so the price seems a little high. What are your thoughts?

MAX SPL

122dB (300mW @ 500Hz)

1wyseman says:  O.K., sorry about going off topic...but, here goes:

I do recall that.

I opened up the MHP-1000 this evening (don't tell McIntosh).  It is NOT a Beyer I've seen or owned if it's a rebranded Beyer.  I'll post pics in my full review.

I asked McIntosh about the Beyerdynamic relationship (my question in bold, their answer in italics)... BTW, I am still loving them. A great set of cans that seems to be overlooked. Pity.

Is the driver the same as used in other Beyerdynamic headphones? If so, which one? Or is this driver unique to McIntosh and only utilizes the patented Tesla Technology? The motor is the patented Tesla; however, the driver is specific to McIntosh (1) with a 6 layer 200 ohms voice coil. The 200 ohms made this headphone compatible with older McIntosh headphone outputs. (2) The internal pad has been adjusted for a smoother the high end. (3) The port size was selected to enhance the low end.

What prompted the decision to utilize this driver? The advanced, elaborate, and unique motor design also allowed for an open center pole similar to our home midrange driver. Certain technical advantages include the reduction of early internal reflections and the ability to port the driver for an enhanced low end response.

Was Beyerdynamic consulted in the overall design of the headphone, or was this designed in-house? Yes, we worked with Beyerdyamic.

In the design, why was a closed-headphone chosen? Unlike an on-ear design, the closed headphone design more effectively couples to the ear thereby enhancing the low frequency response while putting less stress on driver excursion and unlike in-ear designs does not intrude into the ear canal.

1wyseman:  And there are a number of other statements in the MHP1000 thread that support this.

You are a BIG fan of FiiO!
Thx for your support.

I'm not sure who that was intended for, but can you answer my question? (Unbiased, of course

)

Will the AM5 drive the McIntosh MHP1000 headphones? (200 Ohms)

By the way, I'm using the Hifiman Edition X's with an AM2 and they sound fantastic!! But those are high efficiency headphones.

Sorry for the late reply.
Technically, the AM5 can drive the headphones with the impedance ranging 16-300 ohm.
Hope that can help you~

 Yes, thank you!

So, "technically" we have a go...I wonder about "sonically". Any opinions out there?

Yes, I know the MHP1000's are designed to be used with a McIntosh amp at $4,500 a pop. I'm just exploring other options while pushing the envelope (and taking nice cans to the cabin for the weekend.)

Sorry, we have not  tested the AM5 with MHP1000 yet

well i installed so many 3rd party music apps, and honestly I do not like any of them compared to the stock music player, the sound becomes muddy and sound stage gets lost with eqing

I do not why this is my experience, despite me being a huge v4a and neutron fan, my main reason for buying fiix x7 was to use v4a and neutron, but i am not getting what I was hoping from that combo at all.

so i have to use fiio music stock app, but what I miss in the the stock music player is the ability to get the bass eq to what I like, as its effect in boosting bass is very limited

now why other players do not sound right, makes me wonder if they utilize the hifi dac in fiio x7 or not, I know some have said yes, but what I am hearing is totally different from stock music player even when no eq is used on both stock or third party apps

its not that i say its Fiio fault, as their music stock app works good, but Fiio we need more bass boost, your eq is not giving us bass lovers what we want, so please consider adding whatever it is to satisfy bass lovers. Maybe you can give us a choice to have 12DB eq instead of just 6db, with a preamp to avoid clipping, or design a basshead amp

  Fiio, I have a wish:

I wish I could organize by folder and by date added to the library. This way, I could have my newest albums listed first and playing through folders to hear them all at once. That's my wish:)

Thanks for the advice. We will forward this to our engineers and hopefully we could realize this.

I'm curious why you can't raise the bass by +6dB and cut the treble by -6dB for a total of 12dB difference?

If the latest FW X7 EQ is anything like the X5ii's latest EQ implementation then FiiO has used a dynamic volume adjustment when adjusting the sliders. This makes it extremely hard to determine what the freq band change is doing when adjusting sliders because it dynamically adjusts every other freq output to maintain volume levels while not clipping. IMO this is the worst way to implement an EQ. The best way is, as you say, just use a pre-amp volume reduction to avoid clipping, but let the user set it and then adjust the EQ. Or simply cut the max volume output down by -6dB as soon as the EQ is activated as another way to avoid clipping.

If this indeed is the way FiiO has approached the X7 EQ then my suggestion for you would be to set the sliders where you like them and then switch between on/off to hear the difference. Not elegant but I found this is pretty much the only way to clearly hear the EQ difference on the new X5ii FW. If this is not the way the X7 has implemented the EQ in it's latest FW then please disregard the above.

Great reply

Thats why we need to see a reply from fiio

Many of us here use eq amd we paid premium price for the dap and had high hopes it being android so we can use 3rd party apps that are known to have great eq

But 3rd party apps do not sound as good as stock app

Now we hope to get an explanation for the eq and how it works and if they have in their plans to look more into it

If not its good for us to know

I am totally speculating here, but I suspect Fiio is aiming at creating a competitive dap to high end dap makers via high quality sound reproduction (audiophile). The x7 sounds really amazing (I am using am5) and easily bests other daps and full desk top rigs I have heard. In fact, I like it better with full size headphones than the mojo, which I sold. If this assumption is true, people wanting to use the x7 to colour the sound via eq (bassheads included) are just not the primary focus fiio is after, though I am sure they will get to it when the bugs and sq of the x7 are as good as they hope for.

Fiio is really good about listening and responding to customers. But right now (and I think rightly so) they are focused on getting rid of bugs and give us the best possible audiophile, uncoloured, sound profile possible.

I think they are doing a good job, even though I have been vocal about how much I find aspects of their UI bugs frustrating. SQ wise, it is a very impressive dap for the cost.
