I don't know about semi-colon but my playlists created with Dapper have colon's.

m3u playlists

I had a problem with playlists playing songs that would play if selected from the folder but not from a playlist. I found that in the folder title the artists name contained a [ é ] (letter not brackets) which I changed to a [ e ] and now it plays from the playlist. I don't if this helps but in any event Fiio has a problem reading playlists.

Have you tried making it a utf-8 m3u8 playlist?

No I haven't but the next time I have a problem I'll try it. I use Dapper to create playlists and I don't think it can create a m3u8 playlist so I would have to modify it manually.

I checked with the Dapper developer and he said the playlist is unicode and the problem is most likely with the X5 2.36 beta FW. He tested a couple tracks I sent him and he see's the same problem.The tracks play from the folder but not from the playlist.

With the above playlist, the first 5 songs won't play because the playlist entry is longer than 128 characters.
 
The sixth track won't play because of the accented character in the filename.  It appears on the X5 (Firmware v2.2) as follows:

I was wrong about the limit being 128 characters.  129 will play, 131 will not.

No, the headphone socket of the X5 only comes with three contacts.
