Sorry for your problems with Fiio.
By my opinion, you got faulty device. Wish for quick replacement.

Thanks, I hope so too... I have reopened the discussion with my seller as well to see if they can do anything, as well as filed information with Amazon.

At this point, I am unsure as to whether or not I want to try another FiiO X5, as I'm sure I'm not the only one with this issue and I am very unhappy with their Firmware. I am doing a spot of research to look into other DAPs that might support dual 256 cards with additional internal storage. Does anyone here recommend a similarly priced unit that with similar features?

Just my 5 cents (and some experience - I have both :) Give a try for Onkyo DP X1 A. Order it with possibility of free return. Try and decide which one like most - Fiio or Onkyo.

Folks,

Can someone with the FiiO please tell me how the "line-out" capability is implemented? Specifically, is the gain function (low, med, high) deactivated when line-out is selected, or does it still affect the output?

Many thanks

Brian

There is an option in settings to have line-out affected by volume, but as standard it is independent. Same with the hi/low gain, it does not affect the line-out by default. I would also add that as far as I can make out (and I have checked repeatedly), as of firmware 1.1.5 (and presumably previous ones as well) Viper effects do not apply to the line-out signal, only to headphone out.

Aren't the N5 and X5 3rd about the same size and weight?
For me N5 is a bit heavier. not too heavy.
idk really, it does say 195 grams as weight.

Plus the button placement and scroll wheel takes some time changing artists.

X5III is a lot easier due to it being a touchscreen. But they do kinda look similar in size.

Well, this can't be good...

Taken while scanning some new files into the library. I am currently writing @FiiO support staff and asking for a warranty replacement unit. Kinda the final straw with trying to make this guy work.
You be getting a replacement.

For the Neutron users, how do I get the screen to turn off automatically? The screen never sleeps for me. I've not tried with Fiio Music, just wondered if anyone has seen this and found a solution. Thanks.

The problem is very easy to fix :)

- Go to Neutron's Settings, then "User Interface"
- Scroll down and set preference as follow
+ Wake lock: turn off - this setting will keep the X5iii never sleep while using Neutron if turned on
+ Power lock: on or off depend on your need. If on, the X5iii will stay on when connected to power source.

That's it!

I am very convinced that there is a not so good design in the amp section of FiiO x5 3rd Gen. After received a FiiO A5 amp and testing with not power hungry IEM for quite sometimes, yes, there is a quite noticeable improvement in terms of better layering, channel separation and overall cleaner sound instead of muddy warm feel.

But these changes depend on your gear. Sony XBA A3 for example, is hard for me to notice an improvement between amp and no amp, the improvement are subtle and can notice when listening critically. But with Fidue A91 Sirius, I immediately notice a positive improvement. It now just sounded much better with the FiiO A5 amp. While external amp did not increase soundstage in terms of width of left and right, it improved layering and depth. Don't think is a placebo effect or loudness effect.

Can anyone please observe and compare the Channel separations of the X5 with some other source. I was trying different sources being X5, A35 (Sony) and others and felt the channel separation o the A35 as well as some ****ty android phone was better than than X5? Anyone else experience something similar? I am using a 24/96 Flac of Any Colour You Like - DSoTM

Yes, my experience is the same as yours. Comparing to sound blaster E3, shanling m1 and my phone, the channel separation indeed felt somewhat lacking on the X5. But it is the design of the amp built in. After I stacked it with a Fiio A5 amp, the channel separation feels slightly better than all my current source now.

Dear friend,

Sorry to hear about that. Can the X5 work again after holding the power button for 15s or so? If the issue remains same, please try to contact your seller for help which may be faster and more convenient. Sorry for bringing inconvenience to you.

Best regards

I'd disagree - spent a lot of time with the Sirius and X5iii - and using A5 and various amps. The X5iii will put 480 mW into a 16 ohm load and 250 mW into a 32 ohm load - so the reasonably sensitive Sirius (113dB and 20 ohms impedance) doesn't need a lot of power, doesn't benefit from extra amplification, and the X5iii has more than enough power to handle.

All this talk of X5iii's sub-par amplification baffles me. It has no issues with power for most of the loads being discussed. I suspect (once again) that people are not volume matching properly (ie to 0.1 dB) when making comparisons. My thoughts on the Fidue A91 here - with reference to X5iii
