I will move away from X5III, as it is very slow with a lot of data on the SDcards.
As soon as Fiio announces M15, I'll chose between M15 or M11Pro ...
We'll see ...

Incidentally, that’s exactly what the maker of said products wants you to do. aka - unforced EOL.
And also why there’s significant resistance to any proper s0urce c0de for newer players.

I’m assuming you’ve not used my modded kernel on the X5.

I'll give it a try ... as I don't use X5III anymore, it's not a nightmare if something goes wrong ...
Where on this > 1000 pages thread should I start reading to get the relevant informations how to do it?
*cough*SIGNATURE*cough*
If you need instructions for a Mac, PM me. It’s easiest on windows, by far.

What, please, does TWRP represent?

Thanks!!! Is it safe to assume that my device has it installed? Recall you did the upgrade for me some months back. And thanks again for that as well! :)

yes you have it :) with device powered down, holding power + previous track + pause, releasing power when ‘Welcome’ appears, you should reach the TWRP splash screen and then the custom recovery. where you can install new kernel zips. I believe I left some sort of reboot shortcut app on your device, it should let you get right to it if needed.

Yes, you did leave an icon that leads to a list of screen options. Thanks, I'll give this a try later tonite.

oops, more question: Are the kernels cumulative, or if I'm a few versions behind, do I have to install all in sequence?

Nope, the only sequence I ever go in (on a fresh device) is 2.8 then the most current version. You can go from 3.32 (might have been the version your device was given) right to 3.41 without issue. But if you have issues. This is always the place!

Okay, I went through the install process, which is admittedly simple, but now about 45 mins have passed. The device was then frozen at the Android home screen. No buttons were working. I did a forced manual reboot, and I get the "all Kernel 3.4 optimizations done" message, but the screen remains frozen. I cannot even power down.

suggestions?

TIA

Additional note; once the reboot completes, the device if functional for about 30 seconds, at which time it then freezes. Example; I was able to launch Neutron, but as I navigating through the folders, it froze after about 30 seconds.

It's likely the version you chose was too fast for your specific player.

1) Hold Power+Play+Previous for 20+ seconds, device will reboot to TWRP recovery.
2) Go through setup process again, this time choose 1416MHz. Reboot to Android

When I get the message "auto reboot after 19M", do I force a reboot, or let it proceed on its own? At this point, the screen is frozen again.
