[FiiO UTWS5] True Wireless Bluetooth Earhooks as Usual,Coupled with Independent AK4332 DAC
Jun 17, 2023 at 9:05 AM Post #2,131 of 2,559
Tested on redmi note 10 pro, xiaomi pad 5 and fiio bta30. Continuous stuttering on 990/909 since the beginning, I had to choose balanced. I've been using the utws5 this morning and they were still in my ears when I upgraded the firmware, maybe the problem is the device heating.

Came back to see how you lot are getting on, so issues are raising their ugly heads.

We have had LDAC at 990k for years (2016 AFAIR at least for Android) without Snapdragon Sound which is no more than a Cert (a piece of paper).

The issue seems (one of your thread buddies told me) the chipset on these UTWS5's and my FW5's do not officially support LDAC so it has been shoehorned in the same way they did with LHDC and that is where issues can come in if both ends are not Snapdragon chips.

So far so good. LDAC (990kbps/909kbps setting) on Samsung Fold4.

Will report back after more testing.

EDIT: Is there anyway to get the phone to default to the 990kbps setting? It seems to revert back to "Best Effort - Adaptive Bit Rate" every time the UTWS5 is disconnected and connected again. 990 setting has to be manually selected from Developer Options every time which is kind of a hassle.

No, it's most phones default unfortunately.

Update - 2.
Selecting all codecs from within the FiiO control app seems to help (don’t ask me why) It still goes pear shaped but, it now takes longer.

Do you mean that if you activate all Codecs in the App, the LDAC is more stable and without weird electrostatic noises, after a while (like an hour or two)?
IF so, do also mean setting it at 990/909kbps?

Additionally, are you experiencing an emphasis on the high frequencies? To me with this experimental LDAC the treble feels almost piercing. I do not recall something like this when I was listening using the (beta) LHDC codec.

Going from 32bits to 24 I no longer have a problem with stability. It works very well in LDAC 990 with my S20FE

Well, the Hi-Res files are 24/94 and apparently LDAC is 24/96 Max though you can set it to 32 (According to Sony) and I read up long ago how PowerAmp etc set it to 32bit, but TBH I cannot remember the reason(s).

I cannot test this on my FiiO BTA30 PRO as it has no 24bit option only 16/32.

Made a short screen capture and you can see it keep between 660-990k: https://streamable.com/m7w6tp

Not quite stable at 990k on my phone even after setting to 24bit.

I reused the UTWS5 this morning. Now unstable with my settings. I go back to 32bits and it works ... I don't understand anything. I think this is a software problem at this level

Bit depth doesn't matter, it only affects how LDAC encoder on your phone gets the audio samples, earbuds have no idea about that and always decode everything as 32 bits (as the DSP core has 32-bit architecture). You're most likely experiencing the Android development settings bug.

Thank you so it comes mainly from the phone

Yep. The actual bitrate probably wasn't changed to 990 kbps (due to that bug)even though it was set in development settings. That would explain why it once "worked". It's recommended to use so-called "Snapdragon Sound" phones, which is a fancy name for "6/7/8g1 and newer", they provide much better experience.

Hi, can I ask you something?

When I go to this website to find phones with Snapdragon Sound, I am not getting any results for any Samsung phone. No phone from Samsung there.
Why is this happening? Am I looking at the wrong place or something?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

EDIT: Now, I see this, as well...
Galaxy S23, S23+ and Galaxy S23 Ultra: Modern Bluetooth codecs are still left out by Samsung

From what I understand after a quick read, though, this Snapdragon Sound has to do with Bluetooth Low Energy Audio (LE Audio), and the new aptX Lossless Bluetooth codec, correct? So, why has not @FiiO implemented the "normal" LDAC codec in a correct and appropriate manner for the UTWS5? Why is LDAC so buggy and erratic?
