Hey guys. Still struggling to understand this, so any input would be most welcome.

When I connect my iPhone to my car’s audio system via aux, volume is perfect. About halfway volume on the iPhone is more than enough to give the audio system plenty of volume to work with.

However when try doing the same thing with the M9, without changing the volume setting on the car audio system, the volume is so low it’s almost inaudible.

Now correct me if I’m wrong but the headphone out of the M9 should be quite a bit louder than that of the iPhone, right? And my M9 is on high gain with turbo. So what’s with the low car volume?

Same thing happens when I put the M9 and car via Bluetooth. Using the iPhone the Bluetooth volume is nice and loud, even at about 40% power on the car audio system. Leaving the car unchanged, M9 Bluetooth volume is almost inaudible.

Something is not right at all with the M9 volume via headphone out or Bluetooth. And via LO it’s so loud my car audio system clips.

Which headphones are you using?

Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 Over-Ear in wired mode. I guess that I have to wait for M9 to burn in. I barely used it.

No I never followed up with Fiio but I'm still wishing on a podcast app like CastBox.

I am trying to pair a Sony (LDAC) Bluetooth device to the M9 and my phone at the same time.

But I get this message "Connected no media" (see screenshot attached) and there is no audio playback from the M9 ???

Connecting the headset to both a music player and a smartphone or mobile phone

To use a BLUETOOTH music player for listening to music and a BLUETOOTH smartphone for making phone calls, the headset needs to be connected with each device with a BLUETOOTH connection.

Pair the headset with BLUETOOTH devices, respectively.

Make an A2DP BLUETOOTH connection between the headset and the BLUETOOTH music player.

Make an HFP or HSP BLUETOOTH connection between the headset and the BLUETOOTH smartphone or mobile phone.

Note

If the smartphone or mobile phone was connected with the headset the last time, an HFP or HSP connection is made automatically when you turn on the headset. At the same time, an A2DP connection may also be made automatically. If this happens, disconnect the headset from the smartphone or mobile phone once using the phone, then connect the devices again by repeating the process from step 2.

Are you making phone call when this issue happens? The A2DP and HFP Bluetooth connection can not work at the same time.

Dear friend,
Are you using the lineout output when connect to your car audio system? The Line level of M9 is 2V which is not too low actually.
The volume adjustment of the M9 is 0-120. You may try to add the volume when using Bluetooth to see if it helps?

One of the biggest issues I have with the X3 is when listening to long audio books which may be 8 hours or more made up of a single file, to skip up to a position later in the file I have to hold down the FF button for what seems like hours to move the track along to the correct position. For instance if I want to move to 4 hours in I have to hold the FF button forever to get to that point.

With the M9 can you use the touch screen to move along to any position within the track?

I have checked out a load of web reviews and review videos but no one actually mentions this or does this when demoing the device on any of the videos.

Yes, you can tap on any part of the progress bar and it will play from there.

Can someone compare the M9 vs hiby R3? Planning to get a dap and looking on this 2.. all i want is a good UI, has BT to stream and has balance out. Will be using it with the DM6 and HD58X.

Thinking of the hiby to be paired with the mojo for future use..

Any thoughts pls..

I only had the M9 for about 2 weeks so that I could evaluate it for the review. I do, however, own a Hiby R3 and have been planning to post a review of that DAP too.

My personal impression of the R3 is that it's a better device all-around in terms of UI. Hiby's OS is leaps and bounds ahead of the FiiO software which is very capable, but a little clunky in comparison.
The only thing I miss on the Hiby compared to the M9 is Spotify. I'm hopeful that Hiby may add access to Spotify in the future, but not holding my breath. I'd actually love to see Hiby add Google Play Music to their streaming offerings but think this is unlikely too.

Anyway... the only other difference is that the M9 is a pretty warm sounding DAP, but the R3 is even bassier. I'd say if you want a player that sounds musical but close to neutral, the FiiO is that player. The Hiby player has a pretty heavy emphasis on bass and lower midrange frequencies and is the warmer sounding DAP when compared to the M9.

The R3, however, does have pretty extensive features to tailor the sound to your personal preferences. It's got an equalizer and so does the M9, but the R3 has something called Mage Sound Eight Ball which is a pretty effective set of EQ faders to tailor specific aspects of the player's sound. Instead of specific frequency bands, you manipulate sound characteristics like thickness of notes, and airiness of treble, etc...

I like the R3. Especially for the money. Sorry, FiiO.

Thanks, will read your full review shortly. I auditioned and considered the R3 before eventually getting the M9. While I did like the R3’s fancy EQ and great screen, I marked it down for several shortcomings:

1. It is underpowered, especially if you intend on using it with full size headphones from time to time. Understandable given how tiny it is, but still. The M9 has more power in SE mode than the R3 in balanced.

2. Some of the features simply don’t work, like DLNA. Couldn’t hold onto a connection between Audirvana and the R3.

3. I use Tidal offline extensively, and the R3 doesn’t support this. Pity.

4. It’s just too small. For some this could be an advantage, but I just found it too cramped after a while.

Not the M9 doesn’t have its own shortcomings, and for $300 you can’t expect the perfect dap. But for me it does more things right, and ergonomically just feels and handles better. As always, YMMV.

Was going to say, if you’re just streaming and using an external dac/amp anyway, you don’t need a dap, M9 or otherwise
