2. Can this unit operate as a desktop (DC plugged in) unit if the battery ceases to operate due to age and degradation of the battery?
when you use dc mode, it circumvents the battery anyway. so this shouldn't be a problem.

Hello all,

Newbie questions here: Thanks in advance..
1. Will there be a user based way to replace the batter if needed in the future?
2. Can this unit operate as a desktop (DC plugged in) unit if the battery ceases to operate due to age and degradation of the battery?

Richard
For number 2 it is a yes.

Thank you gentlemen for your replies. This is good news. So effectively I can use this as a dedicated mini-desktop system if the future if the battery can not operate or be replaced. This is good news and a big advantage over other DAP's in my opinion.

The DC mode completely bypasses the internal battery.
It is like a desktop DAC with external power supply.
I have mine always hooked to the FiiO PL50 (review pending).

If you won't change your M17 battery after its lifetime period, it could get swollen and can damage internal components of M17. That is not not a good idea to leave the battery inside M17 and use only DC...

It isn't user replaceable, but DC means you can use the battery seldom, keep it at comfy 10-80charge and only use the battery on the go, prolonguing its battery lifespan considerably

Well said and makes sense.

Tho i would literally pay extra for an M17 with easily repleaceble battery from the user. That would be the DAP to end all DAPs. Sort of King of All.

@FiiO
Just heed our humble desire: please put an user-replaceable battery in the M17plus/ltd/v2. Pretty please. If you do that, it would be a killer feature that would OBLITERATE every single other DAP on the market.
I know it could cost a lil extra.
I know it would add to engineering.
But being able to buy a spare battery for a 1.7k device would go a LONG way for those who desire a TOP DAP who can be considered age-proof.

Could not agree more. I do hope that Fiio is listening / reading so for us early adopters of the m17 could get access to a reasonably priced battery replacement kit that makes for a swap of the battery "easy," and cost effective to maintain this $1800 USD DAP.

What would be the estimated lifespan of the battery in the M17?

should be years, and i dont think one cycles 0/100 each day. but peace of mind is priceless, user battery would give us lots of that
