AFAIK ESP is like a buffer to prevent skips, there's nothing to do with compressing audio data.
Yes, and since it exists I never thought the audio data could have been compressed just for storage, especially when ESP appeared in mid-90's on portable cd players.
I think nowadays it would be quite ineffective to compress the data stream just to achieve 30s or more of 44/16 audio, respect to the amount of memory needed.
I would think that Fiio has implemented it the good way, just storing the oroginal data in a rolling buffer.
@Scrunch Gumpgins : I think there is a lot of misunderstanding on the ESP fuctionnality with Fiio Willson, and the technical details.

Once again, here’s what Willson said
Hello I've reconfirmed, and so as not to misunderstand you, I thought I'd tell you that:

1, after ESP is opened, the file is compressed, the compression time is 60 seconds for CD format and 120 seconds for MP3 format.

2, when ESP is turned off, the audio stream will not be compressed.

So it is recommended to turn off the ESP switch in non-mobile scenarios to get a better listening experience.
Also, the notion that ESP has nothing to do with data compression is only true depending on the player. Take for instance this section from the manual for the Panasonic SL-SW860

I'm literally shocked :triportsad:

Waiting for an explanation by @FiiO Willson

English as a 2nd language. It's clear to me what he was trying to say, but didn't
What about “it is recommended to turn off the ESP switch in non-mobile scenarios to get a better listening experience.”? I’m not well versed in Chinese, but I don’t see how that could be a mis-translation of Chinese for “ESP does not affect the sound quality”.

It's all good. Speculation by you or I is just that without a proper spec sheet to review. We'll find out soon I bet.

You're perfectly right, I can't see how it could be a misunderstanding then...
So it seems that, as long as ESP is active, the digital stream is compressed and stored in a rolling buffer, then uncompressed to be fed into the DAC, all in real time :slight_frown:

I'm not considering such (not-so-slim) player for real mobile use, but like my DAP "home-mobile" use. I use it steady in any room when I cannot use my main speaker system in the living room because it is in conflict with other members of the family
But I understand that some of you would use it in a car or even during commute, so there's a real point using ESP. In this case compression is a pity yes, because lossless memory storage is not a problem anymore...
The paragraph on the Panasonic SL-SW860 is a discovery for me

NB: My Technics SL-XP350 from 95 hasn't got any ESP, and if you don't start to shake it like crazy on the horizontal plane, it is OK. Of course if you would go biking with it, I bet it would skip at any time...

When ESP is on, the read data will be put into the cache first, and the cache will store 60 seconds of data to cope with the need for jitter

When we tested it with our audio analyzer AP-555, we found that when ESP is on, the CD player's distortion data will be slightly worse; and when ESP is off, the data will be back to normal.

This depends on the servo decoder chip.

In fact, portable products now only have this one chip to choose from, may be in this regard, he is a little worse than the previous chip, but he is the only left at present suitable for portable CD player master control. I can't get any more more in-depth info on ESP either.

I hope you don't get hung up on this technology, and if you don't like him, here's a switch you can turn off.

You are communicating really well. No worries!!!

Thanks @FiiO Willson - appreciate it’s not easy to communicate in a non-native language.

It’s weird that there seems to be no reviews out there yet.
Yeah, I would also like to have some "reviewer's" or better, average user's feedback, As the first units have been despatched 2-3 weeks ago...

I received my review unit and have only had time to listen to one album on it. Initial impressions are very positive so far, though the one thing I noticed is that it does not show up as a CD drive in Windows (maybe a driver is needed?). Excellent build quality, internal DAC sounds great so far.
