Fatal flaw with Audeze EL-8 ???

Sep 16, 2015 at 8:53 PM Post #46 of 138
Mine had a problem with one channel not working.,I was told it was because of a shipping problem in the packaging. I had to pay to ship mine back, but they did give me an apple cord for free. This set sounds wonderful. I hope it's not faulty soldering because I don't want to have this happen again, particularly after the warranty is up.

Hello, I am new here and this is my first post.  I have been listening to headphones most of my life.  I currently own HD-25 aluminum, B&W P7, DT-1350 and a few IEM's.  I recently purchased the Audeze EL-8O and was wondering if anyone who has experience with them have noticed a crinkling sound almost like the earcups are stuffed with plastic shrink wrap material.

The sound occurs whenever i press on and release or tap on the earcups or move my head around. The air movement that is created seems to be distorting the drivers temporarily until the pressure/suction dissipates. Unfortunately it is impossible to use them without encountering the noise.

I spoke to Audeze and they say it is normal for the EL-8 and is a normal characteristic of planar headphones in general.

I would really appreciate those of you with EL-8'S or other planar magnetic headphone experiences.  Have you encountered the noise?

Thanks!

I noticed that on mine too before the cup died. I wouldnt say it is normal for planars cause my he400i doesnt make those sounds. I did notice on the EL8 opens though that there is a suction on the cups which I found odd for an open pair of headphones.

Mine don't do anything like that. My first pair had the non - functioning driver flaw on one side and were returned. They claimed there was a problem with the shipping box. I'm surprised that they'real claiming your problem is normal. I can't imagine that. Return them. I had a very good experience with support.j

Thanks Peter. Unfortunately this is my 3rd pair. The first pair had the crackle and were returned. The second pair had a dead right earcup. Audeze sent me a third pair and these have crackle in both ears.

I was also told it was related to the packing material in the box. All three of mine supposedly had the "new" packaging so I don't think that had anything to do with this issue.

I have the emails from Audeze claiming this is normal but I am not ready to share them until I talk to Audeze tomorrow. I want to give them another chance to make it right first.

Well, now... This doesn't inspire confidence. I never quite bought the packaging explanation. As far as I know, they don't have these sort of problems with their other, higher end models. They had to cut corners to make these at this price point. Oppo has shown it can be done. I wonder where they'real being manufactured. Or is there a design flaw?
I'd suspect the points of connection first. I love mine - they are exactly what I was looking for from a pair of headphones, used primarily with a balanced cable and my Pono. I hate to be paranoid. I truly hope you get this straightened out because they sound wonderful when they work. But if I were in your place, I'd probably be so frustrated I'd give up and want my money back. Then again, I don't know how much crackling or how severe it is.
Keep us posted. Good thoughts to you and Audeze.

I don't think they had to "cut corners" to make this price point, hell they're still quite expensive and all the expense went into R&D. Buy it or not, the packaging explanation is the one they're giving now. I personally also believe there are two design flaws; one with the drivers and another with the connectors.

Oh wait, the crackle in the ear cup too, that makes 3.

I'm relieved because Royal Mail found my headphones and my replacements are finally on the way; I was guaranteed 1PM delivery on September 2nd and they got there September 17th.

If I get any of these faults in my replacement pair I'm going to ask a refund, because I can't sell them.

I wanted to provide an update on my EL-8 situation and it's great news. As I expected Audeze took care of me. They replaced my EL-8's and the new ones sound amazing. No hassle, no BS, just excellent service.

All companies have issues from time to time, it's how they handle it that sets great companies apart from the rest.

Thanks Audeze for setting the bar so high!

I am confused, Great Service equals someone telling you that a defective product is normal, and only after further complaint do they make it right..................I always thought great service meant a company doing the right thing the first time and being Honest

Well, I'm in a hold pattern after the seller received my EL-8's, they're saying the RMA has to be confirmed with the manufacturer. It's been a week now.............In 5 separate emails Audeze asked for my serial number and I gave it to them, (boggle?)

"Great company" is not quite the description I have in mind for Audeze right now.

I think they were being honest, I don't think they know for sure what caused the problem. It's hard to diagnose and describe a noise over the phone.

What I do know is they quickly replaced the defective units with one that works and I didn't spend 1 cent of my money and both times they sent the replacements overnight.

They did do the right thing, they replaced the defective unit with a new one via next day air. Granted, it had an issue as well but that has nothing to do with customer service. In the end, I got the product I payed for and their efforts to make that happen are appreciated.

Cant have it both ways, you said they told it is a NORMAL sound for EL8 and planers in general, (Not my planers by the way) now as a manufacturer of Headphones Audeze would know IMMEDIATELY that the description you gave is ANYTHING BUT NORMAL, If they did not then I would not want to deal with them at all.................

If you are happy that is what matters

From what I am seeing in this thread concerning the EL8 it certainly looks like a company KNOWING they have a problematic product and rather than
MAN UP admit it and issue a recall and make it right with ALL affected, they are following the NEW Business Model we see all the time with many products

Deal with the Problems as they must to pacify the few and wait on the warranty to expire saving them a ton of $$ and putting the expense on the customer, You see it all the time with tons of products and it is the biggest reason I refuse to purchase any new product without a PROVEN track record

You have a point. I was more focused on the end result. I too wish they would announce a formal acknowledgement about the issue. Unfortunately I don't think many businesses are going to do that.

GM didn't do it with their ignition switch even though lives were lost. Takata didn't do it with their airbag issue and again lives were lost.

At the end of the day Audeze doesn't owe you or anyone else a show of their hand. They honored their warranty with a positive attitude and I now have working headphones which was always my goal. You and only you get to decide if you want to buy their products.

Mine started developing issues about 2 weeks in. E-mailed Audeze. No reply returned them. It's a shame very good headphone with poor quality control.
