i am an old HD650 enthusiast. i bought a fresh pair of Beyerdynamic pro DT770 80ohm and put them on the end of my chunky 30gig ipod for two weeks at full volume with clean bass heavy music (no distortion).

all i can say is that i'm stunned. completely stunned. stunned. these make the HD650 feel anemic, pigeon chested and weak. the sound stage is stunning and effrortless. COMPLETELY regardless of ipod or V3. the trebble is sweet and well moderated, making the 650 seem a tad shrill and bright and thin. the 770 bass is sourced from a sweet lucid bottomless pit.

WHY WAS I NOT WARNED OF THESE EARLIER. SHAME ON YOU HEAD-FI!! FOR SHAME!!!!!!

right now, i see no reason to listen to the hd650, whether its through my ipod or my musical fidelity x-can v3.

volume wise, the dt770 appears slightly more difficlut to drive than the hd650, regardless of their 'ohmage'. if anything, the dt770 appear to benefit more from the mf v3 than the hd650 does, as it slightly attenuates and sharpens the stunning bass of the dt770.

for reference, according to tests, my hearing is slightly 'above average' in all frequencies for my late 30's age.

depends on what kind of sound you like. if you like the DT770 Pro so much, i suggest you try the DT990 / DT990 Pro, which i like even better as they feel like open, more refined versions of the DT770. personally, i prefer the HD650 over the DT770s, but that has a lot to do with the open vs closed sound.

i've been something of a sceptic of break in for electronics, but more sympathetic when a membrane or more physical element is involved.

so harshly did i treat the dt770's, i wasn't even sure if they would survive the break-in period, but they did survive. and all i'm left with is fullsome sweet silken musicality.

one question - how can a so called 'studio' headphone be so smooooooooth?????

Everyone knows sennheiser is mostly aimed for Classical music, you should too.

Not quite, I am listening to the HD600 with my electronica collection. So far, I am finding them very enjoyable.

To OP, what is your current source? What other cans have you tried besides the DT770/80 and the HD650?

Shame on all of us, we forgot to tell him that the Stax O2 might present the music even finer most of the time.... Anyway I'm not big on Sennheisers either, nor Beyer's :p
