My first impressions of DDs have always been that they tend to "overpower" the mids and high, but are amazing once you past that phase, though the LX is still being the one exception. For me at least the option seems to be go the Valk with fewer W9s, so I hope this isn't a LX situation all over again, where the W9 overshines everything.
I think a lot of us expected the Wraith to be the Tribrid and not the Valk to be honest. Before even the price tag was annouced "2 BA bass" on the Wraith more or less took it out of consideration for me. Especially since it's suppose to be a Zeus sucessor. You really can't call it a sucessor and still retain that anemic bass. I'd take less ESTs and BAs for a W9 or 2.
I specified on a different forum that the single EST in particular seemed to not carry its weight, and maybe I shouldn’t have lumped in the BA with it. Thinking a bit more on this, I guess there have been plenty of 1BA 1DDs that have worked - like some of Sony’s hybrids or even Empire’s own Bravado.
I’m not an IEM designer, but I do make it a point to at least try every IEM I can. The Wraith (4EST 7BA), Jomo Trinity (2EST 4BA 1DD), AAW Canary (2EST 4BA 2DD), Oriolus Percivali (2EST 2BA 1DD), Wavaya Penta (2EST 3BA), Wavaya Octa (4EST 4BA), and even the failure that’s the Shozy Pola (2EST 1DD) all at least double up on the Sonion tweeters, which makes the simpler Valkyrie setup stand out a bit? Simple can be good, but even double ESTs can often feel overshadowed, so I’m not too surprised I felt that way about the Valkyrie.
@rwelles the Wraith is really big - you’re going to need some blessed ears to not have it stick out as a custom
