great thread.

i second fsol, the orb, and for something unusual check out "reich remixed", a collection of steve reich's minimalist classical pieces remixed by electronica experts.

as long as we are discussing ambient, there are a few brian eno essentials i would like to list, keep in mind that eno's ambient music rarely uses beats, and so some people find it slow. i find it fascinating and trance inducing.
brian eno:
thursday afternoon
ambient #4: on land
apollo: atmospheres and soundtracks
neroli
shutov assembly
my life in the bush of ghosts (more rock oriented, w/ david byrne)
the pearl
cobalt blue (with michael brook)
spinner
drawn from life
music for films
evening star (with fripp)
eno box set (ambient)

Anyone like Matthias Schaffaeuser? I think he totally rocks. He just
released a new album called 'Matthias Schaffaeuser vs. VA - Selected
Remixes Volume 1' and I think it's absolute genius. This guy knows
how to remix.

The recommendations I made aren't old, I just don't like trance/house

Not intending to start another pointless f trance/f idm thread...

Actually, it's about 13 or 14 bands on Warp, but yeah that's about it these days. As time passed, I found my tastes narrowing, i sold the rest of my cds, and now 80% of my collection is that stuff.

Dave Seaman's Melbourne album is old, considering I've had GU023
for quite a while now.. And as far as Satoshi Tomiie's NU006
goes, it's even older

that's why i think it's wrong to lump all electronic music into electronica as this thread does. It would be like calling all music with a guitar guitarica music. There are definitely strong divisions in the electronic music genre, the most brutal and vocal being the IDM vs. house/trance

OMG do I share your opinion Jon Beilin

I mean, most people on this board who listen to 'electronica' are into ambiant
and lo-fi electronicky stuff. The kind of tracks that are 20 minutes long and you
hear one 'eek' and a 'pfffft-tsssssss' once every 45 seconds.

I came in this
thread thinking 'Hmmm, wonder what kinda of 'electronic' people here listen
to!'. Sadly, pretty much everybody here have the same taste when it
comes to electronic music : Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, Autechre, etc.
I didn't see one guy recommending house music or even techno (real techno,
don't wanna see someone mentioning Darude, please, o please!

).

All you house lovers and techno heads, come out!
As for all you trance hippies.. just stay in your basement and dance.

This is probably because "Techno" is a type of electronic music that most people can identify easily. When I think electronica, I think any electronic music...I must not be aware of any more precise definition it has. If I were looking for techno, I would post or search a thread for techno...it is more descriptive. I have no idea of what genre the music I talked about it, but Mouse on Mars is not ambient at all, they are something much more likely to be played in a club...I don't think I would call them techno though...as for the rest of the categories, I think they are unknown to all but the most involved in this type of music. Many people have no idea how to describe what this music is other than by stating the band name or saying it is "electronica" or "electronic music". If you want something more specific, try adding a modifier: upbeat electronica, chill electronica or something like that. There is no reason to tell people who like a different aspect of electronica to go away in favor of people who like faster or harder stuff -- it is just a semantic problem. As I said earlier, if you want to find a thread of recommendations for that type of music, just make a new thread and call it "Techno and House Music Essentials".

Hell, I like hard and progressive house as much as the next guy. I just don't think there's that much to talk about with that genre. If you're a noob go pick up a global underground comp. or something and pick and choose what you like. Seems to me all the best stuff just comes out in single form so it's either go the compilation root or start racking up the 12inchers. And that's not a complaint, my 12" stack is getting pretty tall.
