I haven't had any problem with the stock battery or the Anker. I did get 5 of the Samsung batteries from eBay and they are all good and it appears that they must have a lower ESR, or possibly a different chemical composition, as they do improve the sound. Since the battery is the beginning of the power supply, it will affect the sound as everything is built on a good and stable power supply for any system and the better the supply the better the performance, in general and in my experience.

Can anyone point me to the best battery that will fit in the case? I ordered one from ebay that was linked here and does not last 4 hours.  thx

It would be nice if you told us which link you ordered from. I bought a few ebay batteries with no problems. You just have to make sure the seller is legit. If the battery only lasts 4 hours then it might be a fake since mines lasting like twice as long.

If you think you got a fake then you can always contact the seller and they'll probably give you your money back.

I got this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-OEM-EB-L1G6LLU-Samsung-Galaxy-S-III-T-Mobile-T999-Battery-2100mAh-EBL1G6LLU-/121397109462

So far, the eBay site above has worked fine for me. Good results both sonically and charge.

already sounds great so i can't imagine. so i just plug in the burn-in cable, crank the volume and let it go for a while?

Yep. Hook it to a wall outlet on random repeat and let it run a couple of hundred hours :)

i totally forgot about the gain setting at all. speaking of which, is there a general guideline for what gain to use? earlier i was listening to it (without realizing) on low gain at about 198 and that seemed great. currently i'm using the zero audio tenores which have a 16ohm impedance and 102db/1mw sensitivity.

Whatever sounds best. I tend to like high gain best. Some hear a difference in gain settings, some don't. Use what works, there are no rules.
