Does anyone know if the DX 50 can drive headphones like the hd650?

Based upon the 300 ohm impedance of the HD650 and the output voltage at high gain of the DX50, it would appear that only about 10ma of current can be delivered to the phones so unless you are content to listen at fairly low volume levels, it is unlikely that the DX50 will provide adequate sound levels without an external amp.

Headphne out:
Frequency Response: 20Hz~20KHz +/-1dB
THD+N: 0.004% (32ohm load)
Output Level: 1.2V(Low gain), 1.7V(Mid gain), 3.1V(High Gain)
S/N: -103dB +/-3dB(Low gain), -106dB +/-3dB(Mid gain), -108dB +/-3dB(High Gain) (32ohm Load)
Output Impedance: <0.5ohm

there are 3 gain mode....either mid and high shd be able to drive..

beauty is such a big commodity, but...
dx100 looks very ugly. Like a smartphone face with a plastic back at audiophile price (even though its not). The DX50 looks like a real player with the interface buttons, and its not thick. It's actually looking pretty slick. Damn you headfi emptying my wallet. Damn thread..

YOU TAKE THAT BACK! I LOVE MY DX100!!

...and it hurts so bad because you're right. God that thing is one ugly brick! But as is the case with the quirky UI; All is forgiven once the music plays.

Even my phone can drive the HD600 to normal listening levels on 12 volume (out of 15).

A Clip+ can drive the HD650 to play loud, but if you want clean sound and a well controlled bass, you'll need an amp.

That must be an amusing sight, seeing those two paired together.
