DUNU - Discussion/Impressions Master Thread

My first impressions on Titan S were posted on my thread in another forum, but might as well share them here.

Review to follow (and some nice pics). Hope you enjoy them!
Nice. Agree with most of your points, especially the treble. Titan S does high pitched instruments like cymbal very well: round and smooth and "sweat" somehow.

Had EST 112 for about 3 weeks, really impressed. Mainly used with an LG V50 with UAPP + toneboosters EQ. This setting works really well, based off the Dunu FR plot.

Intrigued now by both Zen (in one direction) and Titan, in the other. I've yet to do detailed research on either, but I like the EST enough to be convinced Dunu is good stuff.

Listening to Titan S now. I took it out of the drawer again to do a comparison for some readers but ended up sitting through several songs. I can see myself using this one once in a while despite having higher-end stuffs. Dunu has convinced me to be curious about their high-end stuffs. Now I just need to convince my local hi-fi store to grab some Dunu from other states…

Old meets new.

OG Dunu Titan 1 along with the Titan S. There is indeed some similarities in the signature but the OG exhibits strong metallic timbre. One thing that the OG does best than almost everything out there in the budget realm: soundstage and imaging. The new one has a faster driver with much better bass (OG had lightweight bass).

FR - TITAN S - Third-Party - Updated 2022-01-31.png

Periodically, we like to examine the concordance of third-party measurements with those of our own. The preceding is a plot of all currently known frequency response plots of the TITAN S, as measured by hobbyists and reviewers. With the exception of a couple of outliers and insertion-related resonance shifts, concordance of the measurements is as expected --- there is generally reasonably good concordance (+/- 2 dB) between 500 Hz to 5000 Hz. Below 500 Hz and above 5 kHz, measurements usually diverge significantly.

If the plots with insertion-related resonance shifts are removed, plot divergence beyond 8 kHz can be seen more easily:

There are still minor deviations related to insertion-related resonance shifts, but more significant would be the tri-modal peaking between 12-14 kHz, suggestive of differences in machining specifications between various types of ear simulators. Beyond 15 kHz, differences may be secondary to a wide number of factors, from microphone sensitivity to low-pass filter used, to differing software acquisition settings. The type of ear tip used for measurement acquisition also impacts treble response significantly. Differences in bass response are also subject to multiple different factors, including all those just mentioned, as well as bass leaks.

In a world where many manufacturers are reluctant to publish their own test results, this is a refreshingly transparent and informative approach, well done Dunu Topsound!
