Well I picked up a set of DT770 Pro 80ohm and I love them, my Denon's are better sound quality wise but the 770's have way better isolation and I love the velour pads but anyway. I thought that the 770's were like entry level then the 880's then the 990's were top, but there not really priced that way there really just 3 different varietys, closed, semi and open. I have heard a lot of good things from both and I am wondering which to get? I like bass and IIR all 3 have moderately emphasized well extended bass. I also know the 880's have a lot of detail which I want. I listen to mostly heavy-metal/symphonic metal but also some electronic and acoustic. I also have a Fiio E17, ill probably go for the middle 250ohm on either but idk for sure.

The 990 is like an open DT770 Pro 80, but BETTER. Bass is tighter, and sound is cleaner.

If you want one with similar amp requirements, get the 320hm.

I've owned 2 990/600s, one DT990 Pro 250, and DT990/32. I prefer the 990/32 overall. The 990/600 was slightly cleaner, but a lot more finicky with amping. The 990/32 is 95% of the 600ohm, and more pleasing with the vast majority of what you plug it into.

Heya,

I actually prefer the DT880 to the DT990. With the E17, set the bass EQ to maximum. It made my DT880's rumble like a bassy earthquake, while still having that wonderful sound stage, great mids and crisp detail without being overly bright. Plus, you can turn it off so that you can go straight neutral for other times when you don't want strong bass.

Very best,

i have the fiio e17 and the dt990 pro 250 ohms, theres quite a bit of bass, sound is fairly clean in general but also sounds harsh and fatiquing after i listen to music for a while. i have not tried the dt880 or dt770, good luck with whatever you are picking

You mean 32? What do you mean the 600's were finicky? anything besides not going loud without enough power?
What about the 250's? I'm thinking they would be a nice in between point.
And why don't you own any of them any more? What did you replace them with?

Very best,

I KNOW! THE E17 is great! Why do you prefer the 880's?
Also the difference between the pro and premium is just the clamping force right?

As you should know by now, volume =/= driving force. The 600ohm can get as loud as the 32ohm off portable amps and whatnot, but the dynamics will be lacking. The DT990/32 sounds fuller off portable amps, and amps not exactly made for 600ohm cans.

In any case, I felt the 32ohm to sound better balanced overall with less than stellar desktop amping. The 600ohm needs truly powerful amping to take advantage of what it can do over the 32ohm, which sounds 95% the same. For the majority of users out there, the 32ohm is the better fit, though be aware of amps that have a high output impedance that can mess with the 32ohms sound signature. You'll want something with 4 ohms or less of output impedance to assure the best possible matching for the 32ohm.

The 600ohm has an airier sound, but lacks dynamics and fullness if you're not driving them porperly.

Again, volume is just one aspect of amping.

Of course, this is head-fi, and the vast majority will steer you towards 600ohm Beyers, despite not understanding that a 32ohm will sound better than a weakly driven 600ohm.

The 250ohm Beyers are probably the best middle ground, as they can be driven decently off both portable and desktop amps without worrying about output impedance.

BTW, the 990/32 pairs up very well with the E17, as a simple treble reduction will work better than boosting bass off a DT880. Reductive EQ is better than boosting. The 990's also have a better soundstage.

I've owned the DT880 as well, and I''d gladly take the 990 over the 880 any day, for my specific preference.

think reducing the high a bit may take away some of the harshness from the dt990 im experiencing?

Both DT880 and DT990 are comparable headphones, but DT880 suits at far more genres than DT990.

While DT990 would give you clearer sound, it's 'beyer' U-sound is just too strong sometimes.

What genre is DT 990 pro bad at?  b/c i find them to be a very all-around set of cans.

I agree I never found them to sound bad for any genre, still one of my all time greats.

All the DT990 needs for some people is a treble reduction. The 990s have soundstage, energy, and impact over the 880s. That's why I found the 990/32 to work well with the E17.

Wouldn't the 250's work well with the E17? Its pretty powerful?

So the 990's are a little more U shaped curve than the 880's?

The 990 Pro 250ohm are only $170 on amazon then the Premiums and other ohm models are over $300

the 990s have more bass and treble, so its obviously more U shaped.

I dunno how well the E17 handles higher ohm headphones. I assume they'll power the 250ohm loudly, but not to its best capabilities.

I have dt990 pro 250 ohms and fiio e17 and yes they work well together. Just get this over the other ones, there's no reason why you should spend 100 more bucks on the same headphone when the 250 ohms and e17 already work well together. As I said, there will be quite a bit of bass, the sound is clean but fatiquing to my ears.
