DNA Stratus 2A3 amplifier - first impressions

Been trying this setup the last couple of days, Sophia 274B + 2A3 and cyroset 6N1P. The results have been good as the setup seems to portray warm and lush sounding on the HD800 though it seems to lack the bass punch.

Not sure if it is me but the NOS RCA 5U4G with Sophia 2A3 does not sound so good as it sounded a little too lush to my ears.

I am using the stock 6N1P tube.  Can someone offer a recommendation for an upgrade.  I looked on ebay for a cyroset 6N1P without much luck and I am not sure how to purchase this tube or if it is different from the stock tube.
Thanks for your help!

Try this link for the cryo 6N1P. They are noticeable smoother and fuller sounding than the stock tube that comes with the Stratus.

Without any direct experience I would guess this tube would be complimentary to HD800 or T1 headphones. I found it to be almost too smooth with my LCD3s and switched back to the stock tube.

The EML mesh 5U4G is a punchy rectifier but I can't say how it sounds compared to Sophia 274B. I can tell you that the older Brimar/Marconi/Crosser U52s make a noticeable difference in the Stratus and, imo, would sound very nice with the HD800.

The EML mesh plate rectifier is a good choice for more bass punch. The U52 will offer more treble refinement over the Sophia 274b but with similar low end performance. Personally I like the Philips 5r4gys for bass punch, though it adds sizzle.

If that doesn't work, change the 2A3. It has a greater effect on bass more than the rectifier anyway. The two 2A3's that seem to get mentioned in regards to bass performance are the EML solids and JJ's. Unfortunately I haven't the pleasure of listening to either. :frowning2:

too bad the gz37 wont work well, the fat bottle version is like the 5r4gys but even more bassy, but no sizzle or syrup :D

I have one of the earlier ones (#11); so for me it's upgraded and the amp is now "current". BTW, when are you getting your Stratus in?

end of September maybe October

Just got myself from a local seller who happened to have a spare GEC U52 tube though he informed me it was a haltron rebranded tube.

So far it sounds exactly like how DG mentioned in her 5U4G thread, grain free and great soundstaging capability especially when using Sophia's 2A3.

Next stop, Shuguang Treasure tubes or maybe Full Music 2A3 tubes

I'm excited for you, MC.  It feels like you've been waiting forever.  It's worth the wait though!

I just wish I could find one of these mythical U52's.

Yea I will be on the Hunt for one as well but I will get the EML 5u4g first and Sophia 2A3. I plan on getting the new Schiit Ygg to pair with the Stratus and hopefully they will sing together.

The EML is actually a really nice tube.  I'm totally happy with it.  All this talk about the U52 being better makes me wants one though

The pairing of the 5u4g and the Sophia's is excellent!
