i bought the samson sr850 instead of the a40's to go along with the astro mixamp what do you guys think? should i have shelled out the extra 60 or so dollars for the a40's or are they overpriced?

You should be asking yourself whether it's working fine for your needs, not other randos on the internets. 
I suggest you quit worrying about what others use or think about what you're using and just enjoy gaming/listening to music.

From reviews and word of mouth, the samsons are great headphones, despite their fairly low price tag.

The reviews for the samsons seem solid (I think there's one somewhere here on headfi) and most of the people here know what they're talking about! Let us know how they work out!
