So sad to know this, I loved that caustic fella :)

Don't tell me that now.. I almost closed a deal with a pre-owned Calyx lol.. I Will take the evening to think about It..
Calyx M owner here. I have auditioned my unit side by side with the AK380 and the new LPGT. I didn´t have once the feeling that the sound of the Calx M is behind those flagship DAPs at all. In the contrary. This musicality you get with the Calyx M is one of a kind. I haven't heard the DTR1 though, so can´t comment on their differences. I guess they are on par but do have different flavors.

I also own the Calyx M, AK 380 and a few other daps and if you don't listen to really complex music that requires a big soundstage I think Calyx M has the best sounding of any dap

Thanks for both feedback.

Please define "complex" :)

I listen mostly to "intimate" soundstage like jazz/blues, some prog rock, classical music, etc.

Not that much Need of an "arena" like soundstage.. I preder detail and upfront sound rather than huge and airy scenarios..

I have calyx m and the prelude. Both are great. I give the calyx the edge in sound and the prelude in interface, battery and portability.
Concerning sound, with prelude I think of Rock and metal and the calyx is for Jazz and classical. Hope that analogie helps.

I think this helps a lot in the choice... :) Thanks

ordered my case this morning - been hoping for this one as I love the DTR1 but hate carrying it with no protection.

Case arrived today. Very nice to the touch and solid. It actually is a "no logo" version, so the prototype of the one currently sold on Penon.

Complex passages is when many instruments play at the same time. I listen to a lot of fast metal music and there are few albums where Calyx M is too intense and you feel that you are bombarded with sounds, but for dance, slow rock or jazz I don't think you can find a better player. For fast music and if you need a big soundstage I would look at Acoustic research ar-m2. I don't have the Dethonray but from the description I think it sounds like Ak380. I like Calyx M and Acoustic research ar-m2 better than Ak380, plus Calyx M has a gorgeous screen and even if it is slow it has a good integrated player, the only thing is the folder option is not really optimized. Hope this helps. One more thing, if you like bass, the Calyx M has a deep and textured bass, the best I heard in any dap

Got the picture. Say I go mainly on classical, jazz and prog rock, so I should be covered. From time to time I might go back to my "roots" and indulge on say, some Dream Teather stuff, but that would be marginal.

Again, talking about bass, I would be curious to see how Calyx M matches my Audeze isine 20.

I have the acoustic research AR M200, should be a smaller Brother of the M2: if so I get the idea there.

Thanks for the hints!

One more thing that you need to know about Calyx M is that it doesn't have an EQ, I don't think it needs one. In my honest opinion for your type of music I don't think there is a better player. I never heard Cayin N8, but under 1500$ nothing beats Calyx M, and I have Astell kern ak380 which is more expensive, but I like Calyx better

I know this is a Dethonray thread, I am interested in it too because of the small form factor

What Is EQ? :)

Believe me, I really never use It anyway, and welcome the idea of not having some "unneded" filters in between... It Is a further loop I don't like to have, so... SOLD ;)

@twister6 hope to find out soon your impressions of Prelude

The funny thing, ever since I mentioned a few days ago on FB about getting DTR1 for review, many questions I received to share impressions are from the current owners of this DAP :D

I promise to spend more time with it tonight so I can share some of my sound impressions, perhaps using Andro and Solaris since many are curious about hissing. And because iEMatch was mentioned in a few of the previous posts, I will throw it into the mix as well, just for comparison.

Btw, the last time I chatted with Anson (outstanding guy!!!), I suggested to add a long-press up arrow during the playback like a "home button" to get back to the main screen menu where you can navigate to settings and other options at the bottom of the screen. Otherwise, when I get into my nested sub-folders, it takes quite a few back left-arrow clicks to get to the settings, especially the gain. Perhaps, gain could be added to playback menu (long-press middle button) as well.
