Ah ha! I don't consider that period burn-in.The cable and drivers collectively sweetened, if you would. Of course, this is 

my view. On a side note, over the years I've heard many pieces of gear - some pieces over a very long time and their replacements due to something being sold or returned for repair. I have heard amps, decks, speakers and other goodies filled with electronics sometimes change with age. Some seem to think this is a stretch, that capacitors, resistors, wiring and such will not age and possibly affect the presentation. Um, I'm so happy for that camp

 over there. Yes, many things can affect what we hear, what we think we hear and what we WANT

 to hear.

Probably not gonna get Denon saying the D7100 is a step down from its predecessor but looking at the price, materials used, design and general consensus from forum members, it's pretty widely agreed that the D7000s are "higher-end" phones. Just from what I've seen and heard obviously.

well i haven't heard the d7100, but i did get to listen to the d600, and they where decent, but not worth the price, considering even the old denon d2000 where better than those (only 200 dollars, more transparency, cleaner bass, etc). just hearing the new overall sound + quality, its pretty obvious that they're a step down from the previous generation.

For me the D600 is somewhat in between the D2000 and the D5000, as reflected in MSRP, being closer to the D5000 in sound. I'm just talking stock here though, with the mods the D2000 becomes as expensive as the D600. The midrange is clearer and the bass tighter, more controlled in the D600. Soundstage is impressive for a closed-back headphone that actually isolates, reminds me of the DT770.
 
As for the D7100, coming from the D7000, the 7100 doesn't wow me in any way, which is somewhat disappointing considering the $1200 price tag. The 7000 is lush and full sounding, while the 7100 is airier. Sibilance is about the same, with the 7000 being a tad more at that. Contrary to popular belief my 7100 doesn't seem any more bassy than my old 600.
 
My conclusion is that if you can get the Denons at 20-30% off MSRP they're definitely worth the money, more so when factoring in the packaging, build, accessories, etc. They do look quite dorky in hands because of the awkwardly huge frame but actually are really nice when sitting on the head.

Looks like Denon shot themselves in the foot with this new line. The future will show.

Personal experience with these headphones. The new line is just not worth you money, and they did a very poor job designing the resonance within the cup. Put your money in other headphones.

Without the box, cables, accessories etc. sure that's about as much as they're worth. Maybe $100 more for each. i.e. if you buy the headphones without packaging or anything else.
 
D600 has been as low as as $330, I think that's a good price. Those like you who judge headphones based on sound only will not be able to appreciate what the new line has to offer, considering that sound might not have been the main focus when they were designed. I do agree that as far as sound goes the 7100 is most certainly NOT an upgrade to the 7000 in any possible way.
