Just quickly tried a brand new, straight out of the box Oppo PM3 at Oranges and Lemons in London (great place, definitely recommend it to Londonders).

Source: Sony ZX2.

Cables are much, much better than MM400 stock in terms of feel/comfort. Even easier to replace than the MM400 because the socket is not recessed in the same way.

Nicer hardcase.

Appearance is nice. Understated. The MM400 looks better in my opinion as it's more striking with its wood, without being brash.

The pads are deeper and look more plush on the PM3 but isolation is roughly the same when it comes to voices, to my surprise.

Comfort is similar. Felt them clamping sightly more than the MM400 but this might well change after some use. I like the numbers on the MM400 headband, which the PM3 lacks.

Bass impact was definitely better on the MM400. More punch and better, I felt.

Preferred treble and detail generally on the MM400.

Soundstage seemed more or less the same.

My preference is definitely MM400 but there's little to it. And bear in mind the PM3 was brand new.
No big weaknesses to speak of and both seem versatile.
I would be very happy with either as my portable (or amp-free) over ear.
Both are better than the B&W P7 in sound and comfort and maybe even looks for the MM400. Much, much better than the Momentum 2 wired in every way.

I so want a pair of these next to my P7's. Are they too similar? I am not unhappy with the P7 but just want to try something new.
While they are comparable, I don't think they're the same cans at all. 2 different sounds. My issue is I thought I liked my P7s (even though I found them too trebly and bass too uncontrolled) then these came along. Sold the P7s and never looked back.

How would you describe the difference?  Particularly bass?  I am very happy with the P7 but would like a bit more bass (yes I'm a bit of a bass head...)

Bass is still present but faster acting, less bloated than the P7.

Romani, I read your review on the mm400's and it was great... really detailed and informative. I might order a pair to compare with my P7's as well.  If you have a moment, would you mind posting your impressions of the ear cups?  I haven't had much time with the P7 so far, but to this point I find myself constantly adjusting the position around my ears. Thanks a lot.

Thanks for the positive feedback, much appreciated :) I was in the same predicament with the P7. I could never find a comfy sweet spot. The P7 may have had larger earcups but the cans were stiffer in the way they were built, giving it a cold feel to hold or wear, both with the earcups or headband. I personally found them painful to wear. The Denons have slightly smaller and shallower earcups. However, they are much softer and I get no pain whatsoever after wearing them for even extended periods. No adjustment or fiddling required, they just seem to sit where they should. I wouldn't go jogging with them by any means, but they are tight enough for you to lie in bed and listen to without them falling off. I would give the P7 a 4/10 for comfort while the Denons get at least a 9/10. They lose a point as the cups could be larger and deeper. I should probably also state my ears don't touch the drivers either but I suspect they could for others. Comfort aside, I do think they have a better sound signature overall even though I appreciate you didn't ask about that. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more detail on anything.

That's really helpful, thanks. I know what you mean about the comfort, for sure. I recently had some M100's and even though the cups were really small and shallow, they were actually now all that bad for comfort. I'm sure this has a lot to do with materials and clamping. I think the Denons might be fine for me.

My only other question would be to ask about the "rattle" but I'm guessing there is more info previously in this thread, i just have to go back and read up on it. I assume it's not a huge deal for you, considering how much you like the headphones.

Thanks again!

Welcome :) I have the rattle and it doesn't bother me because I know it's not something inside the earcups but in the hinge. Easy fix is to apply a little dab of grease where the problem spot is. Good chance is if others are not experiencing it, Denon might have rectified the issue already. And yes, I still adore these headphones. Honeymoon period is over and I'm still crazy about them.

Edit: One more thing. I sold off the M100 because of comfort issues too thinking the P7s would soften up over time. I ended up worse off. Issue with that one was the headband. Oddly enough, a friend who bought the M100 on my recommendation got them in the shiny black (as opposed to my matt black, forget the official colour names) and I encountered no issues with comfort when I borrowed them for an extended listen in the office. True story.

Romani if you ever find a deal on the 7100 pull the trigger, the sound signature is very much denon and very similar to the mm400 but better in every way. I lucked out and got a pair on eBay for cheap and now my lcd2's don't get much use anymore

Thanks for the feedback on those. I won't lie to you, I stayed away from that generation of Denon headphones because of their look and build, didn't realise they're that noteworthy sound wise. I should probably give them a go one day if I locate them here in Oz.
