Depends on what the listener desires. I love midrange and don't care too much for bass, so the TH-900 easily sits below both the T1 and HD 800 for me.
This probably has something to do with why I was pleased with the HD 800 even when I heard a MDR-R10 on the same day, and not pleased when I listened to the TH-900 back-to-back with a HD 800.
But sound signature aside, I'm honestly not sure the TH-900 resolves on quite the same level as either the HD 800 or T1. It is a clear step up from the D7000 in this regard (which resolves admirably for ~$600-700), but I don't think the level of refinement is good enough to play with the modern best. To my ears the in-production sub-$2k trio are ruled by three headphones of different design -- HD 800, LCD-3 and SR-007. I hope that the next Fostex iteration achieves a level of grandeur that is not shamed by these three (or any headphone for that matter).
Personally, I've owned/own all three of those headphones mentioned (T1, HD800, TH-900), and for general use I would pick the TH-900. The HD800 continues to be my reference style headphone, the go-to for testing tracks because of its unbelievable airyness and soundstage. Honestly for the average listener that just loves to listen to music the TH-900 will probably deliver the most enjoyable experience. The T1 was good, but wasn't on the same level as the TH-900 or the HD800 for me. You also have to factor in the immense amount of money you have to spend to really take the HD800 and the T1 to the next level. The TH-900 is a lot easier to amp/dac match, and in the end sounds really good out of a DAP alone. Personally the cost the TH-900 is high, but worth it for the heavy enthusiast. Plus, if you're considering the TH-900... don't pay full retail price. It is silly, when you can buy them new for $1500 and used for $1300.
