Personally, I've owned/own all three of those headphones mentioned (T1, HD800, TH-900), and for general use I would pick the TH-900. The HD800 continues to be my reference style headphone, the go-to for testing tracks because of its unbelievable airyness and soundstage. Honestly for the average listener that just loves to listen to music the TH-900 will probably deliver the most enjoyable experience. The T1 was good, but wasn't on the same level as the TH-900 or the HD800 for me. You also have to factor in the immense amount of money you have to spend to really take the HD800 and the T1 to the next level. The TH-900 is a lot easier to amp/dac match, and in the end sounds really good out of a DAP alone. Personally the cost the TH-900 is high, but worth it for the heavy enthusiast. Plus, if you're considering the TH-900... don't pay full retail price. It is silly, when you can buy them new for $1500 and used for $1300.

Depends on what the listener desires. I love midrange and don't care too much for bass, so the TH-900 easily sits below both the T1 and HD 800 for me.

This probably has something to do with why I was pleased with the HD 800 even when I heard a MDR-R10 on the same day, and not pleased when I listened to the TH-900 back-to-back with a HD 800.

But sound signature aside, I'm honestly not sure the TH-900 resolves on quite the same level as either the HD 800 or T1. It is a clear step up from the D7000 in this regard (which resolves admirably for ~$600-700), but I don't think the level of refinement is good enough to play with the modern best. To my ears the in-production sub-$2k trio are ruled by three headphones of different design -- HD 800, LCD-3 and SR-007. I hope that the next Fostex iteration achieves a level of grandeur that is not shamed by these three (or any headphone for that matter).

yeah hearing the fostex, i feel like its still not as good as T1/HD800/LCD-2/LCD-3, but its much closer now and while its not exactly a bargain at 2 grand, its worth it if you enjoy a basshead sound signature and just want to have the best available. im buying a pair later this year, so i can have a fun high end headphone, it improves alot on the d7k, so i think its ok. i'd be much happier paying closer to 1k-1.3k though.

Excuse moi but, did you mean to say "exactly a bargain at 2 grand" or did you mean not exactly a bargain at 2 grand...?"

Lemme post here also...

Recently bought a Denon D5000 with Lawton Mods Level 3... so basically a LA5000. Thing is that it came on an AH-D7000 case! Right?! What?!?! So I asked the person that sold it to me if I had an LA7000 or an LA5000 and he doesn't know!!!!!! Heck I could have an LA2000 LOL!!!

Is there anyway to "ID" the Denon series (other than what was written in the cups)? Since cups are also non-stock, there's no way to know easily. I mean, I THINK i tried to find marks on the metal frame, etc. but couldn't find anything...

Any hints?
Would the drivers have any numbering or anything?

Also, the box came pretty complete with the instructions, a cleaning cloth, etc for the D7000... which makes it even weirder...

Thanks.

You can tell whether it's a D2000 because it has a different color to the duralumin than the D5000/D7000 AFAIK.

Yes, the part number of the D7000's driver is different from that of the D2000/D5000.

My D7000 had "AH-D7000" written above/on one of the gimbals; not sure if this is consistent in the post-2012 model. If the only change was in the cups, that writing should still be visible.

Yes, the silver portion wil have D7000 on one of the sides...

Excellent. I'll check.
If it doesn't have it, then it might be a D5000 or even a D2000... hmmmm...

Suspense!

It doesn't really matter if it's a D2000 vs D5000. The only difference with the two was the wood cups and cable, so doing a full mod on them will create the same output.

But if I decide to sell them later on, I want to be able to say which headphones are they really! LOL
