It's been some time now I was enjoying D5200 for a while then I got Hifiman R7DX, which I thought sounded better on Dragonfly Red.

But later I realize R7DX while sounds good on most things but doesn't scale as well as D5200, so on Violectric V200 I do think D5200 scale more and overtake R7DX. Otherwise on lower sources such at Dragonfly Red I find it drives R7DX better.

That being said, is everyone still using their D5200? If not what headphone did you upgrade to? I'm still using the D5200 but just curious where everyone's at. Friend is trying to convince me to go LA7000 which I think I'll eventually get there, but trying to gather more info now lol.

I have just got the 5200 again after owning them twice in the past.I upgraded to the 7200,but sold them on recently. While I enjoyed the 7200 sound listening to the 5200 now I really don't notice much of a sound difference, maybe the 5200 even have more bass?.
Listening through the dragonfly cobalt, and now at the moment the cheaper ibasso dc06,which I just purchased.Got the ibasso for the balanced input for the sony mdr-1am2(my cheaper alternative to the mdr-z7 that I also owned in the past),but have been using it with the Denons and really like the sound.
Maybe my old ears aren't upto hearing the extra sound quality of more high end headphones, can't really say I have found much improvement on the 5200 to be honest.
The Sonys are now for sale, and I thing the Dragonfly cobalt might be going as well.

lol I also had D9200 in the past and then later sold it to go back to D5200. Though I feel like for me it was more of a tonal preference, I think I prefer the tuning of D5200 more. But D9200 do have more resolution.

I wonder if there are higher tier headphone that has the same tuning as D5200.

That being said my hearing probably is also getting worse LOL. Also I think Ichos published a review on DC06 and it seems very well reviewed. Then today you're the second person that says DC06 is great. Maybe I should definitely check it out.

I preferred the tuning of the 5200 over the 7200 as well, but the 5200 doesn't have the same resolving capabilities. With some tracks, the 5200 could sound a little harsh, and a little boring. It's a good option for a daily driver, but nothing to get overly excited about imo. It is however mod friendly, which is nice, and improvement can be made/heard.

Yeah another issue I find is that D5200 isn't that comfortable to me, but I do like the tuning and as you said resolution isn't there.

I wonder what would be an upgrade from D5200 with same sound signature but higher resolution.

Yeah, comfort wasn't great. I haven't found a closed back upgrade with a similar dynamic, energetic, somewhat neutral tuning - yet. Everything I've tried has mountains and valleys somewhere in the frequency response.

Have you tried TH610 by any chance? I read somewhere that it might be close ish?

Otherwise I'm thinking to try either Lawton D7000 or Lawton TH900 or Sundara Closed.

I haven't, but I've been told that the treble can be bothersome for anyone who might be treble sensitive.

So guys here's some update on my forever search to find a direct D5200 upgrade.

I tried TH900 Lawton (Type 2 Quilted Maple Wood) and to my surprise...... It sounds really..... Not that bassy? I think Lawton pad focus more on resolution/clarity while having less bass, but I also tried it with Dekoni TH900 lambskin pad and TH610 pad, which make it "thicker" sounding / richer timbre at the cost of clarity/stagesize.... etc. So it's different trade off.

Crazy enough I still think I like D5200 better LOL. Might potentially sell off TH900 Lawton later.

On a side note, anyone here tried Sundara Closed? Also is it worth it for me to try D7200 just because why not?

Dac / Amp wise anyone has experience with Denon's own DA-310USB?

https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/Headphone-Amplifier-Resolution-Compatible-310USBSP/dp/B01N8Q8URC

Or anyone tried Hifiman's EF400?

https://store.hifiman.com/index.php/ef400-736.html

Thanks!

I tried denons dac/amp right before covid hit, in a hifi show in japan, and again at a store. At least pretty sure its this model. Was the first time I heard the denon hps. Can't recall sound specifics, but I remember liking the form factor, build and sound.

I listened to the 5200, 7200, and 9200 on it. I clearly remember preferring the 9200 because the detail, and then 5200. I wasn't found of the 7200.

Ohhhhh so lucky, I want to go to Japan again. I like how EVERYTHING has a demo model in japan. Hopefully I get to visit again one day.

And that's good to hear about the Denon Dac/Amp. Thanks!!!
