Dan Clark Audio EXPANSE Review: Interview, Measurements, Impressions
Jan 3, 2023 at 1:25 PM Post #1,591 of 2,599
I emailed Dan Clark, asking what they would recommend and they sent me a document with their recommendations:
"The headphones are relatively low impedance,

-Aeon is 12.5ohms
-Stealth is 22.

-A good rule of thumb is the best amps will double their power as impedance drops from 32 to 16 ohms.
-For Stealth we recommend at least 500mW at 32ohms
- for Aeon 500mW at 16 ohms. Also its quite important for the amplifier to have low output impedance, preferably
1ohm or lower.

Below are some links to amps we like but there are many others

What do you think about Schiit Jotunheim 2 + DCA Stealth, not in terms of power, but sound quality?
Not a problem at all - That’s my work rig (with a Bifrost 2/64 and an Æon Noire, the Stealth is mostly at home). Even at low gain you’ll be hard pressed to go beyond 11…

How do you drive your Sus?
Reading your posts re Expanse and Stealth, have had the same thoughts in the end about those.
Yes, I use my ADI-2 Pro SE (and before that the DAC) for everything. If I need a change of sound, I use the EQ.

We are going to update our list of recommended amps after the upcoming CanJam in NYC, where we'll be trying out some new gear.

A few worthy additions to the list above include stuff from the insanely affordable to insanely expensive:

@ampsandsound Red October and Nautilus

Burson 3GT and 3XGT

@HeadAmpTeam GSX-Mini

RMI ADI-2 Pro

Schiit Asgard 3, Jottunheim, and Lyr 3

Topping A90 and A70

SMSL M500 mk2 or mk3

Chord TT2

Now that we have an AP555B we'll probably be putting a few more amps not only through listening but measurement to qualify, assuming we can get samples to the lab to test... We haven't put a number of these units on the bench, though the Asgard is in use in our lab due to its sterling performance and value and for the measurement oriented it's excellent.

If you can get your hands on one to try out Dan, for the stupid expensive list I highly recommend the Holo Bliss amp.

Might I also suggest these particularly for the Stealth:
1. Zahl HM1 (World class technicalities that show cases the Stealth's supreme resolution, incredible imaging and sound stage depth, effortless and musical)
2. Woo Audio WA 23 Luna (Phenomenal imaging, and dynamics, with hauntingly magical vocals that get even better with tube upgrades)
3. Questyle CMA 15 (Superb pairing with the Stealth, and was even better than the more expensive Ferrum Stack, this one is a giant slayer)
4. Chord Anni (This with the Qutest may lack overall refinement of the ones above, but certainly begins to show case what these headphones can do, diminishing returns beyond this is painful )

Akin to the way folks optimize their systems for headphones like the Susvara, I’ve optimized mine for the Stealth. I’ve tried a decent number of amps, a list that is by no means exhaustive. The above 4 in addition to the ampsandsound amps already mentioned are my favorites, albeit overpriced to me.

Both Jotunheims or just Jot 1? (Genuinely curious)
We prefer Jot 2.... I also suggest an external DAC vs the internal option.

The Anni has pretty low gain and some people may have trouble getting the peak SPL they want with that pairing. For me it's OK but I listen on the lower side to protect my hearing.

With a nice DAC I thought it was really smooth and clean, in fact this is my current bedside amp.

The Jotunheim 2 seems to be rather affordable and a solid starting point. The only input I can give so far is that the Lehmannaudio Linear USB sounds a tad too sharp/sibilant with the Stealth. It's the same with Hifiman and others, so nothing wrong with the Stealth. Lehmannaudio is basically the 800S of amplifiers.

Thanks for sharing. I also recommend the Questyle CMA 15.

For Topping did you mean A90?
