Cowon Plenue 2 - Taking it a step further.

Jul 5, 2018 at 8:35 AM Post #766 of 1,025
Hello,

I am just sharing my set up and my opinion---

1) Plenue 2 + JH Audio Rosie IEM---- I am using this for last more than 24 months mostly while in travel or walking. The sound is very nice..It is musical, crystal clear, good sound separation. Six months back, I also bought AUNE- B1s amp basically for better sound purpose. There is small benefit in sound quality by adding this amp. But found that the same sound effect can be obtained by increasing volume of Plenue 2. so I do not use it ( Aune B1s Amp) much nowadays.

2) Plenue 2 +Audeze LCD2 ... I heard lot about open back over ear headphones. So purchased Audeze LCD-2 one year back. Very nice sound quality. I shall call it-- punchy, deep bass. I like these cans very much. Six months back I also purchased Audeze Dekard amp assuming that Audeze amplifier shall be good and perfect match for Audeze earphones- LCD-2. Audeze Dekard makes remarkable difference in sound quality of LCD-2. One can feel the more openness, free ease/ flow of sound with use of these amplifier. LCD-2 need amplifier for better sound quality and Dekard is one of the best match.

3) Recently I bought STAX L700 with SRM 353X: (Set up- PLENUE 2+ AUDEZE DEKARD + SRM353 + STAX L700) -- I could listen to it seven to eight times in last two weeks. I am not audiophile to describe the sound preciously in words. Sound quality of STAX L700 is very-- fast, crystal clear & accurate. The bass and punch of LCD-2 is better than L700. But L700 has also nice bass and punch. Treble, accuracy and musicality of L700 is the best.

I like L700 than LCD-2.

For STAX L700 --What I like most is--- I can now enjoy my Samsung Galaxy S9+ with my STAX L700 through Audeze Dekard. When I listen to U-Tube live performance /Musical concert -- I feel like I am in live show. L700 is very good enjoying experience for listening (and also viewing ) to such live music concert.

I am using mine with Shure se846 in ears and I did previously try the 535ltd myself but I didn't like them and sold them. The 846 are a massive step up to me and superb with the plenue without using my Mojo. As to the volume differences, when you listen at "normal" setting switching to any equaliser setting boosts the volume by varying degrees depending on the profile you choose. I don't use volume equalising, dont seem to need to. With the eq profiles you get an instant comparison to the sounds making it really easy to compare. I seem to prefer the "rock" equaliser for 90% of my music.
I wouldnt take too much notice of the others on the trhread "knocking" you using the mojo with the plenue, I like to experiment too and that to me is totally about what makes this hobby so interesting! Have wires...will play....
I love Shure and have the SRH540 closed back but prefer the 846 in ears.....have fun.
P.s. you can disable the buttons on the plenue so that there are no accidental touches... There are lots and lots of tweaks that you can do, you need a really good play session with it in the settings, good luck.
Just one more tip... I also sometimes forget cables. Invariably the hotel will have a big box of "forgotten" cables, if you ask nicely at reception they usually let you borrow what you need....I've done this a time or two so I speak from experience.

Thanks for your thoughts.

How do you find the SE846 compare to the 535LTD? Is it just bass improvement, do you think I could match the differences with EQ/BBE?

I appreciate your support with the knockers. I do like to test every possible option to get the sound I want. Thankfully, the ignore button is easy to find. ;)

Nice tip, about the hotels. They did lend me an iPhone charger. I am spending today playing with the Plenue settings. I will look for that buttons option. Another thing I can't find is how to change the album listing. I'd like the album list to be in recording date order (yes it's in the meta). At the moment, it's in alphabetical.

I had the 535ltd previously and so not having them now I can't do a direct comparison but I remember that I found them too treble bright and could not listen for a prolonged period. I did have the se215 at the same time and preferred the smoothness of them in comparison.
The bass on the 846 is way, way better to me than 215 and 535ltd. Also I like lots of detail and again the 846 gives me that in abundance. So many new things to be heard from tracks that I thought I knew well. Very, very pleased with the 846. Just for info I had some Sennheiser ie800 at the same time sound was ok but the fit in the ear was bad and the microphonics noise of the cable was appalling along with very poor overall cable design, so they to me are not even an option.

Crikey, that manual is poor. It seems to cover very little of the available options. I did do the button lock & promptly undid it as it was inconvenient to be unable to pause the music quickly enough.

I've been doing a lot of listening today, both with the Mojo & without. With & without BBE & EQ settings too. At the moment, I've ended up BBE "normal" & no Mojo. Frankly I got fed up with the usability with the extra cables & Mojo rubber bands in the way. However the Mojo is needed with my over ear headphones. Even at full volume, the P2.2 can't drive the headphones loud enough.

I tried many of the BBE settings, including a lot of BBE Headphones #1 & tried the Rock setting. For me, Rock sounded a touch too fake. Headphones #1 were good, but over several hours & albums, I ended up on flat setting as everything else sounded a touch less "convincing".

I've now got a good sound, but a little too forward on cymbals & a little light on bass guitar & bass drum. I'm thinking that maybe my earphones could use an upgrade to get nearer to my perfect sound.

I also view Artists, then albums, but the albums are in alpha, which I find a little awkward. Are there replacement UIs available?

I'm sorry, I meant User Interface(s). I remember on my old Cowon Rio Karma player I had a Rockbox UI installed. It doesn't seem to be available for the Plenues though.

Its ok, I will probably add a number to each album metadata. The UI is really quite poor, think of an album list from someone like Genesis or Yes. :\
