I'd suggest the AKG k240 Studio for $99. You can often find them for around $70-$80.

I also liked my M30 for classical sometimes.

Putting cost first, the 555. Not putting cost first, the HD650 without doubt. The 555/595 are surprisingly neutral and open for their price, while the 650 gets as close to a true concert hall balance as any phone I've heard. If that's what you're interested in--a concert hall balance as opposed to an exiting or "fun" sound--then you'll want the 650.

Or a Senn PX100-ii for $60 on sale.

With that "in your face" sound, muddy treble and exaggerated bass?

Fostex T50rp, no contest. To me they absolutely destroyed headphones costing 3-4 times as much.

Superlux HD668b for ~$40. Although some found the bass not go deep enough. Me, personally, found the bass ok. The staging and imaging is awesome (for the price)!

Did I misinterpret? Is cost-effective the same as cheap?

The term cost-effective is really a bit confused.

The idea for this thread came from this one from "boodi":

I just wanted to add: what are the cans that exceeded your expectations, on classical music?

I never got that sense from them at all. The treble is fine; not as clear as a K701 or DT48, but certainly respectable. The bass is strong for an open set, but to my ears only a problem with bass heavy songs where it bleeds a bit into the midbass (but once again, being open mitigates this). Classical isn't typically bass heavy, so no problems there. As for the "in your face" sound, I guess that's just preference. I go to they symphony almost every second week and sit about 3rd row. It's hard to get much more "in your face" than that.

No, cost effective should mean "bang for buck". That is, if a $1000 phone sounds as good as a $3000 one, then it's cost effective. However, when people ask that question they usually mean, "What can I get that sounds brilliant and doesn't cost the earth?"
