Same here. Can't tell you much more other than I've always felt like AT are a lot more clear than Senn of comparable price in my personal experience.

Well, thank you all for the help then. I will continue research and likely end up with the AT. Or maybe I'll win the lottery and buy an Orpheus. We'll see.

One of the two inevitable directions when discussing the HD6x0; the other being cables

Yeah, it comes up in every thread and I've never heard a veil. Ever.

If you can stretch your budget $40 or $50, you might look at the AKG K701 (B stock for $250). Excellent can. If not, the Sennheiser HD598 really doesn't have much of a veil, IMHO, and would save you $70 off your stated budget--you could spend the difference on music.

7xx + amp would probably beat out the HD600 in most cases for clarity and extension.

Not for me. HD600 and HD650 beats out any of the AKG K7XX or Q7XX for clarity and extension on both ends of the spectrum, especially with the right amp (usually OTL tube amps). Everybody's mileage varies.

On one note though, the K712 specifically, is like a thinner sounding HD800 lol

Hmmm. I was trying to think within the budget.

The Q701 had better extension to my ears that the HD650 off similar gear. Tonality was better on the latter, and more musical. I don't think the HD600 could beat either.

I own the new Philips Fidelio X2, and it's worth every penny of its $299.00 price. Though it has trouble staying in stock on Amazon.

Skim through this thread. Many people are saying that the X2 is superior to the Sennheiser HD600 and HD650. To me, the X2 is definitely more fun to listen to than the AKG K712.

To be fair, my dentist's drill is more fun to listen to than the K712.
