I don't even know where to start with Liszt. Been conditioned to Beethoven, Schubert, and Mozart.
Can anybody help an ignoramus here?

I lke the sonata in B-minor (by Argerich) and Deuxieme annee de Pelerinage (Italy) (he wrote this stuff when he took of with the love of his life (so he thoiught ;))
& his two piano concertos are fun.. and I like his Faust Symphony (by Bernstein, especially the 3rd, Mephistopheles part)

that's about it for me regarding Franz Liszt..

I have these. Wasn't floored by the sonata (I'm a tad superstitious -- funeral marches....), but liked the Faust. Muti/Philadelphia also was good with that. Not sure about the Pelerinage.

Leslie Howard (not the Brit actor!) did a complete Liszt box with Hyperion....did you explore/buy that?

With so many pieces written by Liszt, I feel I am being deprived....still don't know where to start outside of the ones you listed.

cheers

best Liszt compositions and best interpretations IMO:

end of list. :scream_cat:

the orchestra version of that Hungarian rhapsody n°2 is pretty cool(I think), I have more fun with it than with the "look what I can do with only 10 fingers on a piano!" version.

being overly technical ≠ making something good. I feel like Liszt missed that distinction most of his career.

I wish there was a way to share this concert. It is one of my favorites. I have been searching to see if I can purchase a FLAC file. Its at Digital Concert Hall:

Digital Concert Hall is fantastic. It is so good that after a few months, we took advantage of the 10% discount and signed up for a second year. We'd sign up for a third but it won't let us! The selection, the performance, the camera work, the sound...

They are constantly adding to the archives and the new season begins next month.

For us...

It's magical.

whew!! good news.
I find the Faust symphony his most fascinating work.Almost like twelve tone before Schoenberg. And the only work from Lizst, that can hold my attention without my mind wandering off elsewhere as in many other of his pieces.
At least with good performances like Bernstein's on DGG and later Chailly/ RCO on DECCA and cd.
That haunting first theme and the way he works on it throughout the piece, is impossible to forget for me. And his take on Alles Vergängliche and Das ewig Weibliche... from Faust are interesting to compare with Schumann's and later Mahler's versions.
A Lizst work I return to quite regularly.
Cheers CC

I am a stickler for Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, and Ravel as well as certain 20th century Americans. I like William Bolcom. Also a big fan of Russian music, notably Tchaikovsky and Borodin. I also love Handel and Bach of course. Handel oratorios are incredible to me.

I discovered a great recording of all of Mozart's symphonies conducted by Jaap Ter Linden and the mozart academy. They are performing the symphonies as a baroque orchestra would, with no vibrato, on period appropriate instruments, and down a half step. It's quite interesting.

I am a violinist myself, and I play in a few regional orchestras. Here is proof:

Schumann symphonies are grossly underrated.
