Not correct - the optical output is the same as the headphone output...

yeah, all macs since 2006 have the mini toslink optical out, from the headphone out, that's why you get the mini toslink cable with the hugo,

when you connect it you can select the digital optical output from the system preferences audio menu like with the hugo when connecting over usb,

check VLC too,

also what settings do you use in audirvana?

Cool! I never tried before but I am now! Listening to miserable YouTube since I never used my Mac for listening to music before. I've been only using my PC so far. Does anyone know if this works for PCs as well?

For now I am listening to:

yes (if it's not too cheap or old, you need to check the PCs specs), well it's mostly a feature of laptop, notebook PCs (to spare space), desktop PCs have a separate full size toslink port of course :)

I think I need to check my PC specs first but one thing I noticed is, my Mac recognizes that it's an optical cable right after it's plugged in and (I don't know how it works) somehow it ??changes?? its settings to optical out. I wonder if my PC laptop would do the same if I plug an optical cable into the headphone out or not. I can't find any coaxial or anything on my laptop though it's a pretty new PC laptop from Samsung.

So guys, back home I immediately tried and I confirm I do have a Toslink out through the 3.5 mm headphones out of my Mac.

I plugged in the optical cable provided with the Hugo and... voila'... it works and it's great.

Too bad I had already bought 2 different USB copper, shielded, whatever cables to try and improve the SQ...

Time for listening now.

Doraymon - separate question. I see you have 846s. Do you hear any hiss with them at all from the Hugo?

Yes sir, you actually anticipated my next post.

Immediately after connecting the 846 to the Hugo the hiss comes in... While the 846 with my AK120 II are dead quiet!

This is not happening with the HD650 headphones.
Any idea why?

Impedance for one.

846 - impedance is 9 Vs 650 is 300

OK - strike the 846 off my list -:frowning2:

Well than you better strike off the AKG K3003 as well, they produce a similar hiss.

I think it's not a big deal, once music starts you can't perceive it anymore, although you know it's there!

It all depends on how bad is your OCD...

Now my question is how is it possible that the USB performance of a DAC like the Hugo can be so easily improved with 49 bucks (I#m referring to the Jitterbug)??!
Why didn't Chord equip the Hugo with a similar solution to clean the USB input signal??
It really doesn't make sense to me.

This is all very new technological discoveries, Hugo was created back in 2013.  Still no DAC manufacturers has incorporated these new tools into their product.  It's all very new.  The Jitterbug has yet to be released to the public, so we don't know yet how it performs, just from reviews.  But the Uptone Regen has and it works great, see my previous posts or specific thread here on Head-Fi.

Sensitivity is also a reason for hiss with HUGO. All BA iems, I've tried so far hiss with HUGO. IE800 is dead silent, Angie has the lowest hiss among BA iems. I think it's because of the inline varistor.
