Chord Electronics Qutest DAC - Official Thread

So, reading through parts of this thread again there seems to be differing opinions as to whether this is a neutral or warm/soft sounding DAC, last page for example there are two or more people agreeing it is 'soft' sounding and best paired with a leaner amp? Do people kinda collectively agree?

Most people will not agree, people hear different things too. It is what it is.

I would NOT characterise the QUTEST as inherently warm/soft to my ears ... more on the incisive side ... although there are filters that can bring down that incisiveness just a smidgeon. I have it paired with a Burson Soloist (which is on the leaner side) but that's because of the warm character of the Empyrean headphones ... the combination works well for me.

The Qutest is directly comparable to the Hugo 2 and shares its DAC design ... that is not warm/soft either.

I would call it smooth, with the right equipment. But some wouldn’t call it that because it is so clean. I have it with a burson to. Very musical.

But some confuse a darker less detailed combo sounding warm.

Like the dac in the violectric v590, in my opinion not warm, but very dark and less detailed than a qutest or tt2. Than you can confuse it with chord dacs not sounding warm and smooth

How about 'smoothly incisive' ? :relaxed:

there isn't a new model coming in the next 6 months.
And how do you know this?

It's six years since Qutest was announced... what would be Chords update cadence?

Well I read through and can't see any reference to a Qutest update...
Ah, OK. Perhaps it was in one of these others:

I guess that's a lot of reading. To put you out of your agony, Rob is working on a super-high-end Ultima range scaler and DAC at the moment. Qutest 2 and Hugo 3 are not on the drawing board yet and may not even be the next priority for Chord.
