Chord Electronics - Hugo 2 - The Official Thread

If that is the case, why does the guarantee for the battery only cover one year?

The battery will last you very long time if you use it in desktop mode because its no longer in charge/discharge cycle. I don't know about the battery warranty maybe you can ask Rob about that.

Here is what Rob says about the battery on a few pages back.

Yes it does remember last settings.

And commenting on battery life. I have talked about this before, but it's tucked away earlier in the thread. Battery life is dependent upon two functions - the number of charge discharge cycles, and the sustaining voltage. If a Li-ion battery is not on a charge discharge cycle, and the sustaining voltage is low, then it will last for many years.

So what I do when the charger is connected for more than 24 hours, and Hugo 2 is on, is to go into desktop mode. In this mode, the charger supplies current that matches the current needed for Hugo 2, current from the battery is only provided for dynamic current surges, so it's effectively no longer in a charge discharge cycle. Secondly, when in desktop mode, the sustaining voltage is reduced to ensure maximum life. If you want to charge it to the max, ready for portable use, simply turn Hugo 2 off, when it will charge it to 100% and turn off the charger. The auto shutdown is disabled in desktop mode.

Thirdly, I made sure that Hugo 2 will function with no batteries connected at all, just the charger. So if you intend to use it as a desktop DAC, you do not need to worry about battery life.

Lithium batteries both Li-Ion and Li-Po begin to destroy themselves from the moment they are assembled, this is mainly due to the volatile nature of the chemicals, so they definitely won't last forever. There is also a small loss in performance for every charge/discharge cycle.

If possible its best to not store them fully charged. The oldest working lithium (Li-Po) batteries, which have been stored at around 50% charge are around eight years old and still work OK, I wouldn't be too surprised if a Hugo 2, used mainly on a PSU wouldn't have a working battery after ten years.

I have also disposed of some other Li-Po batteries supposedly of very high quality with a high price tag that are much newer.

You can expect the batteries to last at least as long as Chord warranties them for, 18 months. After that I am sure your dealer will be happy to replace the batteries at your expense, so it is no big deal. If you don't want batteries I think you should wait for the 3qute.

Of course, as had already been said, the batteries should last a very long time if you just keep it in desktop mode so there is probably nothing to worry about.

For iRiver players that i bought in the past i was a bit concerned about having the batteries replaced, but after a while all was ok and was not a problem.
I don't think dealing with companies such as Chord Electronics even after the warranty expires will be a problem.
I don't think we can really criticise this product IMHO because there is no other similar one to come even close in sound department.
Again, who can afford it should buy it and enjoy it every day.
Definitely is a terrific DAC and being able to have it operated by batteries is a massive bonus.
I am just getting warmed up by the sound and i have a feeling it will be another great long night.
Coming from Hugo and Mojo for me this is an major upgrade starting with the sound and ending with the high quality finish.
I am sure this happed to the Dave owners:
Even if you can tell how good it sounds out of the box, it takes few good days to adjust your ears to the sound and fully appreciate details in music you haven't heard before.

I don't have the quotes here but it may be on video (you tube) where John talks about new technology with the batteries and the Chord batteries lasting 10-15 years.

Given their reputation and their product quality, I think the batteries may exceed even these estimates. This is my expectation.

I purchased from there for $500 less. It went up $500 a day later... not sure why.

Apparently it is controlled by Chord and has nothing to do with the supplier in New Zealand. If someone from Chord is here to answer, why is the Hugo2 far more expensive in New Zealand than it is in other countries? Even taking tax into account the Hugo2 costs more than 800 US $ more in New Zealand than it does in KSA.

How is it apparent that Chord controls the prices country to country with different currencies, duties, fees etc?
