@musicday

The best transport would be one of those new iPads just announced which have up to 512GB of storage, if it were just for the purpose of taking it somewhere to put on a desk and listen.

I also understood that iPad cannot handle more than 16/44 music, even as a pure transport ? is it correct ? Will it be able to pass native 24/96 to the HUGO2 without downsampling ?

May be a Microsoft surface Pro with 1 Tb SSD runing ROON SERVER is a better solution ? (Windows 10, Core i7, 16 Gb RAM &... 1 Tb SSD + MicroSDXC reader = 1,25 Tb total !)

@musicday How does your Hugo 2 compare to the Tera Player? :ksc75smile:

Most players seem only to have one micro SD card slot, but I've found that to be enough with 256GB cards. I've been using a FiiO X7 (with non-amped module) and a cable I custom made to go between it and the Mojo (which I used with the Hugo 2 at the Tokyo show). Oyaide make both 3 and 4 pole right-angle 3.5mm plugs.

Thx been looking at the naim unity core or ndx ....again some new products are coming soon ....

I beleive you are correct via cck, 16 bit 48 fr, the iMac via USB can do 32 bit 784 fr and I'm not sure about power books, do the new have a USB anymore.

Listening to Agnes Obel, Red Virgin Soil, it truly sounds sublime, really showcases Hugo 2, surreal depth and realism to the music. I am finding that Hugo 2 with ATC SCM19 speakers is more unforgiving than I expected. So much so that I decided to substantially reduce the toe in on my speakers to tame the top end a little.

What about the issues that many users have been reporting with iOS compatibility? Won't that be a problem with the iPad?

That'd definitely be something to test. I've been using iPads with Chord products for a while, but it wouldn't surprise me if you didn't need the latest CCK with the latest iPads.

As other people have stated, 3rd party software can output anything, even DSD. A Surface Pro sounds like an interesting idea though. Even just TIDAL with offline mode might do me.

New MacBooks and MacBook Pros have USB C, which works fine. You just get a suitable cable or adaptor dock as required.

The Tera Player is the best music player I have ever heard no matter the price. Very small, simple to use ,very black background, organic and fatigue free even after 8 hours of continuous use and doesn't get warm, always cold.
Hugo 2 is the best portable DAC no doubt about it IMHO. Just like the Tera Player, Hugo 2 is very detailed, has a black background, and is more powerful and can drive all the headphones.
Also is fatigue free which is very nice for long listening.
The size matter :) 80 gr vs 450 gr in this case.
