Chord Electronics - Hugo 2 - The Official Thread

I got my Hugo 2 Thursday and too early to comment as limited listening Through Optical in only through speakers. I can hear no difference between the filters and i can only see that the filter light switches when i change filter and they all sound the same and i hope i got a functioning unit... Would be interesting if anyone that can hear the difference give examples what to listen for as as an example the incisive sounds just as warm to me as mojo. Maybe going to Gorillaz live on Thursday shattered my eardrums as they played very loud and i need to give it a few days...
I briefly listened to what I was told was a production example of the H2 at an audio show in March. It was very soon after the doors opened, so the background noise was not too bad, but if course not ideal. I listened to a Diana Krall track with well recorded piano, and I could definitely hear a difference between the first two and the second two filters through Focal Utopia headphones. I even convinced myself I could hear a slight difference between the first two with this (I think) 44.1kHz track. But when posting this impression, Rob Watts expressed surprise that I could hear a difference with a non-high-res track, so I accept that I most probably didn't, but will revisit this when I get my own H2 and have chance to test at home. But I definitely heard a clear difference between the first two and second two filters. Not sure if this difference would be quite so obvious through speakers.

Hello my good friends can someone chime in about hugo 2 charger?
I was wondering if it uses 12v or 5v charger
I have a teddy pardo that I charged my hugo 1 and would like to know if I should keep it

The charging circuitry is inside the Hugo 2, but the power supply will be outside (to convert the mains voltage to the 12V or 5V or whatever).
I presume that you are referring to a teddy pardo power supply.

Thank you for your comment. I listened to cd and realise now that there may be little to no difference with or without hf filter, so will compare filter 1 with filter 3 instead. Thanks again as i should have thought about that! Paul

Pastwa, can tou describe
Later : 2qute vs Hugo 2 with more details?
Thanks

Very early notes (new RCA, stock USB), however, what is obvious from the start (via RCA outputs - amp- speakers) is that Hugo 2 digs deeper than 2Qute, the whole sound has more substance (fuller vocals) giving more entertaining performance. This is what you notice right away, so you almost cannot go wrong with any music, everything sounds at least good, very fluid presentation with impressive body/weight to the music (this is where Hugo 2 leaves behind 2Qute).

ps. what worries me is that my Hugo 2 drops out signal too often (it practically switches off every 5min now, so I have to press the power button - the cover is very warm due to charging process).

Maybe you are suffering thermal shutdowns.
The recommendation for the Mojo was fully charge the battery first, then the Mojo would generate less heat when listening to music.
An additional factor was the ambient temperature - the higher the ambient temperature, the more difficult for the Mojo to transfer the heat by convection from the surface of the case, with the result that the Mojo internal components are forced to run at a higher temperature.

Maybe the same applies to the Hugo 2 - if you are using your Hugo 2 to both recharge the battery from a low %, plus listen to music at the same time, your Hugo 2 will be generating heat from the charging circuit plus the DAC components etc.
It is midsummer and hot in europe, so what is your local ambient temperature?

I hope you are right.

Yes, this is exactly what I did today (started charging my Hugo from 0% and listened to the music at same time) . The ambient temperature is however 23C in my room well within the recommended band (5-40C or 41-104F). I will give it a rest for an hour and see what happens.

Thanks for the hint.

I really hope that the H2 RCA fits a pair of Chord Epic RCA else I will have a serious problem, as I love those cables... :-/

I ended up with Chord RCA cable (Clearway), so you should be fine ;')

what can you suggest as the BEST portable high-End source for a HUGO2 (with large storage and very friendly UI, including Tidal ) ?
