Chord Electronics - Hugo 2 - The Official Thread

More info...

It will be in desktop mode as long as the charger is connected. If you turn Hugo 2 off, then it will charge the battery to 100%, then turn off the charger. Normally, you would leave it on all the time in desktop mode, as it only consumes 2W, the battery voltage won't wear the battery out, and the battery is not being charged / discharged, as charger current matches Hugo 2 current draw. This strategy gives the maximum life possible; also the power supply is such that if the battery capacity falls to 0%, Hugo 2 will still function with the charger connected.

That is perfectly normal. Desktop mode means that the battery voltage is maintained at a reduced level, to maximise battery life. But what happens if you want to take Hugo 2 out and then need a full battery charge? Then turn it off, and it will then fully charge up.

No to engage desktop mode you simply have to have to supply uninterrupted power to the charger port for longer than 24 hours.

There’s a lot more if searching this thread for "desktop mode", posts by Rob Watts

Power from the charger is bypassing the battery in desktop mode however there is some residual small net discharge on the battery during use so when you turn hugo2 off and while it is permanently connected to the charger it will recharge again till full then turn off. Next time you use H2 you have a unit ready for mobile use fully charged up or continue in desktop mode with charger always attached and repeat the cycle. Simple. Magenta indicates desktop mode and i can't see any reason to keep H2 on 24/7.

Well you wouldn't activate desktop mode and wouldnt turning it off at night mean thats 1 charge cycle if it charges to full and then stops? 1 charge every night to keep the battery always topped up which they dont like as i hear they like to be kept charged between something like 20-80% for maximum life expectancy. I think leaving it on until it swaps to desktop mode and then not turning it off would be better meaning its always drawing power from the the wall plug and not using battery at all for however long you keep it in desktop mode.

If you are turning off Hugo 2 every night your never really switching to desktop mode are you.

The downside with that way of course is if you do want to take it portably your battery will be low or drained. I leave Hugo2 on 24/7 and i haven't needed to take a portable dac anywhere with me for a long while. But if i do now i know to turn it off the night before and it will be ready next day.

Desktop mode means the charger is plugged in 24/7 and on at the mains. Whether hugo 2 is on or off makes no difference as it is still in desktop mode because the magenta light will always come back on when you switch hugo2 back on. It is not one charge cycle either because as i said a small residual net discharge on battery during use so i think around 5-10% charge cycle starting with full. Why should i wear it away by leaving it on 24/7 when i'm not using it. Everyone does which suits them.

What would you be "wearing away" when leaving it on?

It's in desktop mode whether it's on or off so why would i possibly want to leave it on when i'm not using it? Once in desktop mode i choose to turn it on only when i'm using it. That's my prerogative even if nothing is really being worn away to noticeable levels. Also remember i have an mscaler attached permanently to my h2 so its not good practice to leave h2 on in my case even though i turn the mscaler off at the mains after use too. I have no problems at all this way and have had none.

Hello
Does someone know a "hard mesh case" (like those for carrying headphones) that can hold the Hugo 2 with its leather case, without rattling :
- for Hugo 2 alone (with leather case)
- deeper, for H2 and stacked DAP (like Fiio x5III, Pioneer XDP300R or Sony WM1Z)
Up
No one ? How do you carry your Hugo 2 when you travel ?

Far as the Chord Hugo 2 as a fulltime desktop DAC (or DAC/amp) you need the correct power requirements (wall wart included) to save the batteries. Rob Watts has also stated even if the batteries ever did go bad the Chord Hugo 2 would still function the same in Desktop mode as long as you give it the correct power needed. I reached for a Chord Mojo for traveling as it covers all my portable needs.

As I travel a lot, I wanted to have the best possible "transportable" (hotel room) gear. That's why I bought the Hugo 2 over the Mojo...
But I want to carry it safely...so my search of as "hard mesh" case, same (but smaller) as the one that protects my beloved Odin Thridi during travel :)

Pelican cases??
Could be a idea... :)
I will check the available dimensions...

But I remain surprised to be - it seems - the first to look for such a carrying protection for Hugo 2.
I have bought an used, and wonderful, blue alcantara case, but it's not strong and covering enough for carrying around...
Anyway I want to protect also the alcantara ;)

You are not the first some have looked before with all kinds of elaborate solutions and even travelling "kits".

Where can I find informations about those kits ?
Any working keywords (hard to search among 1044 pages of information... :) ) ?
"Trvaling kit", for instance, gives no result.
