Hello everyone,

I cannot decide what Hifiman should I get; the Sundara or the Deva? I have read really great reviews about them, but I cannot decide.

I need headphones mostly for guitar playing at home.

Which one should I get?

As long as you have a decent headphone amp, I'd also recommend you consider the HE-560 V4 for $249:

I'll vote for the Devas. Not much help I know but I do love them. Sorry haven't heard the others.

Out of what you're listing I'd say the Sundara, but that may see another update in the form of an improved magnet array, if the 2021 HE400S international version are any guide.

What is your existing headphone collection?

Thanks for the suggestion, but the HE-560 V4 is around 700€ here, and that’s sadly out of my budget.

After listening to sound demos I think I am going to get a Sundara.

I have a Xiaomi Pro HD Audio in-ear and an old Videoton FH 10 as of right now. That’s why I want a better one.

Would also recommend having a listen to the Audio Technica ATH-R70X... in the UK that would be £211, and in the EU it'd be around €280-300, so it fits inside your budget.

I own both, and for a daily driver, I highly recommend the ATH-R70X, which is a spiritual successor to the Sennheiser 600 series, complete with competent imaging. Against the Sundara 2020 version, you're trading a little bass extension and a little detail for excellent timbre and imaging.

The Drop HD6XX (aka the Sennheiser HD 650) is also in the mix if you prioritise vocal timbre and want silky mids.

I was thinking about buying a pair of Sennheiser HD 280 Pro MKII for Podcast/Streaming/Voice monitoring. Is there a a good budget Chi-Fi option out there that you would suggest for my needs? I was thinking about the Samson SR950 but I don't know if it's a good choice in 2021 vs other ~$50-60USD options.

Takstar Pro 82 v2 (TakstarAudio store on AliE), otherwise look at the AKG K361 or K371. K371 would be better for vocal monitoring, but is also closer to $100 USD in most regions.

Personally, I would go open back if you can, but then also stretch up to the Sennheiser HD 6XX @ $200. There's also the Koss KSC75 ($15) to consider if you're genuinely strapped for cash.

Not Chi-fi but AKG K92 is a solid option in that category.

BOYA HP-2 has been a pleasant surprise. I prefer them over the over chi-fi I own under $100. (Takstar pro82, Takstar pro80, Sivga SV007, Archgon Delicato, Meizu HD50, Superlux HD 672)

Has anyone tried alternative earpads for the (unmodded) Xiaomi Mi 2nd gen graphene? @Slater maybe? I know that you put a grado bowl on your open back mod, but have you tried it on the original closed back? I'm thinking about opening up the sound a little bit, and maybe an over-ear earpad would achieve that. I've seen that the 1st gen Xiaomi actually had an over-ear earpad option, sadly I haven't seen something like that on aliexpress. I've only seen on-ear pads like this https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33056492955.html I guess if it come with the plate than a different kind of pad could be attached to it.

Unfortunately, Slater was last seen on Feb 17, 2021.
(I hope he returns.)
