Cayin N6ii, Unlimited Possibilities: a fully modularized smart DAP

I’m sure the screen protector should be installed. There is also a spare one in the package. This is a new unit, I’m sure about that, however the case... It’s so ugly. Ordered the Dignis case immediately. The dealer has already sent me the adaptor but still, my unboxing expectations were a bit higher...

Did you buy it with the e01 module? There's no 4.4 input on that one so I could see it potentially not being included.

As for the screen protector... It's been brought up a number of times in this thread. Due to the "2.5d" curved edge screen I believe cayin switched to using a gel screen protector that molds over the edges. It's trash. Seriously, it sucks. Any kind of pressure and it crumples and comes off the edges. It kinked up as soon as I put the case on. I consider it protection for shipping and that's it. Use the glass protector that was included. It's fine, though due to the screen it doesn't sit flush at the edges.

I think you will likely be more pleased with the actual usage of it even if your unboxing experience wasn't great.

I thought that ‘gel’ protector WAS the shipping protection for the screen...I just ripped it off immediately. The thing had bubbles all over the inside anyways when I opened it up.

agreed it’s a superb player btw, just need some proper screen protectors for it, which I can’t seem to find/don’t know if they exist.

Yes I confirm, that's the case it's only included in A01 and T01 bundles.

I bought it with A01 and T01 so the adapter should have been included. Can’t use my 2.5 cables until the spare one arrives... Hell! I see now, it’s some kind of a gel protector and it looks worse and worse every minute. I’ll peel it off tomorrow. Now to the Cayin app, well I expected better. Somewhat complicated UI and missing track numbering is a fail... I have to admit that the battery life is impressive though.

The screen protector is the new gel one on the latest units. I have had many people ask me if the screen protector is already applied to the players because it honestly looks like it doesn't have one fitted. If you look close enough at the edges the gel protector can be seen. Some people have also accidentalt or not applied the packed protector on top of the gel protector.

My demo unit has a really annoying crease in the bottom right hand corner of the gel protector because the case annoyingly pushes it off.

Yes this is exactly what my unit does too. The combination of that screen protector and the horrible looking case which is slowly peeling it off is unacceptable for a player in this price category imho...

Take the gel protector off, it's rubbish. And neutron has track numbers if you need that. Also neutron peq is very good and pretty easy to use. Very easy to shape the sound.

On another note, I don't suppose there's anything smaller that sounds this good and functions as well. Not U8 lol. I was looking at plenue r2, just curiosity there. Cowon is making the crap out of plenue models.

Don't get me wrong I adore the sound of this thing (A module). And I understand the extra weight and thickness because of the modularity. I've tried m11, dx160, DX220, r5 and I like the sound of this better. I guess I'm just curious on the cowon, I had the plenue d and that sounded ok but not great. I know they don't have android.

My E01 module just got past the 100 hours mark and I’m starting to understand what @PhilW meant when he says this module performs better at a lower volume. If I have to summarise the key qualities of the E01, it would be 1. Maximum details extraction and presentation and 2. Articulation, all presented in a wide and deep soundstage.

My module now sounds closer to the first time I heard it with zero hours on it. Mid way through the burn in, the mid bass got accentuated and soundstage closed in. I’m not sure why that is but I’m glad it got past that stage. The E01 module demands the best file source and transducers because of the amount of details it throws out, evenly across all frequencies. Which means that when you raise the volume, all frequencies and their accompanying details get elevated. As a result, if your file source is of poor quality (not talking about bitrate but mastering), you will hear the occasional clipping in bass and sibilance in the treble. This is probably why it sounds better at a lower volume so you don’t get overwhelmed by information. Feed it a well-mastered recording, you will hear EVERYTHING with every instrument in well defined spaces and the appropriate amount of decay and articulation. This is not to say that the E01 is sterile, it’s still very musical and analogue sounding, especially on Class A.

I think when Cayin set out to make a specialised module, they have succeeded. This is not a module very everyone. It demands good sources and most importantly, your attention. I have tried many daps (including detail monsters such as the LPGT) and I think I can safely say that, if details is what you want, you cannot do better than the E01 module. Well done, Cayin!

Sources: FLAC through Neutron (with all to DSD on), Tidal HiFi
Settings on my transducers: Hidition NT6 (Class A, Low gain, slow roll-off); Sony IER-Z1R (Class A, High to medium gain; Fast roll-off)
Type of music: Heavy and death metal; classical; Low-fi beats and the occasional jazz

I purchased on Amazon a soft gel clear case that included a front and back tempered glass screen protector. They fit perfectly. They are a tad smaller than the stock screen protectors to allow clearance for the case. They lay flat without any bubbling.

Yeah I have that case as well. Couldn’t get the right side to stay flat without a bubble line in the right side. Second attempt with the protector included with the unit = same result.

edit: don’t like that case either. Feels almost as cheap as the one included. Be advised...

edit; if you have any tips as to how you managed to secure the flat protector to a curved screen without a side air bubble please let me know.

Agreed with the above. My other issue with this is that the screen protector doesn’t properly fit the front and accommodate for the curvature of the screen, which means you have an entire line at the edge which cannot simply make full contact and shows as a long bubble.

So it either needs to be a protector that’s slightly smaller than the original (so that it doesn’t begin to hit the curved edge and lose contact), or there needs to be a curved screen protector for this DAP...I can’t see the protector staying on their long/not letting dust in eventually with the entire side.

I’d love to just be able to carry this around without a case and just 2 screen protectors. It has a nice feel to it despite (or considering) the weight ahah.

Anyways, anyone find a good quality screen protector that fits the front properly?

I am very pleased with my case and the screen protectors. Maybe you got a bad set of protectors.

Appreciate the tip. I’ll try that next time...maybe it will help the edge adhere better (?). I thought cleaning with an alcohol wipe, microfiber, then using a can of air would be sufficient.

Appreciate the help! Just want to make sure I take care of this thing. : )
