Cayin N5ii Android based Master Quality Digital Audio Player

@Andykong, unfortunately the issue is Cayin removed the "Applications" page in the Settings app so the steps you indicated aren't applicable and there's no easy way to circumvent this issue, as I told you almost one year ago (and history finally proved me right, alas). If I may suggest/ask for a new feature for the next firmware release, this would be reintroducing the "Applications" page, as that is key to grant users full control over applications and come out of situations like this.

My suggestion for everyone who has this issue is to manually install via APK an alternative launcher (say, Nova Launcher). You can find fully legal and free APKs on apkmirror, as an example. You have to load the APK on the device's memory (either internal or external), then navigate to its location using ES File Explorer (which should be pre-installed and therefore available after a hard reset) and install the APK. Then you have to open the launcher as an app from the drawer, long-press the Google Play Store icon and select "app info". There you have access to the "clear cache" and "clear data" controls.
I know it's a bit complicated; if you need a more complete guide with step-by-step instructions I can create one.

Very good suggestion. However, what I found is that once Google Play gets in the hosed state, uninstalling updates, clearing data/cache doesn't make it stop with the errors.
The only real option I found was to factory reset, never touch Google Play, and download / sideload any APKs needed (ex. all I wanted was Spotify). Hopefully there will be a less messy solution to this issue soon.

I have the DM6 and it hisses on the N5iiS, the DM6 also hisses on the Nintendo Switch lol I bought an IEMatch to solve those problems
If I had a low end range of IEMs like the DM6, I'd probably do that, but then at that point I'd just plug it into my phone instead of buying DAP tbh. I absolutey refuse to add an additional component to my chain especially since it involves a TOTL IEM. Thanks anyways

Yesterday I start to experience force stops of Google Play Services ("Unfortunately, Google Play services has stopped") every 10-20 seconds on my N5ii. Even with Audio Priority Mode "ON".

I tryed to RESTART, DOUBLE WIPE, remove sdcard, format sdcard and none solve the problem.

Doing more tests, I believe that I founded the issue (no solution yet): When you to the DOUBLE WIPE procedure you need to re-insert your login information on google app to download spotify (the only app I use). After login inserted, google apps start to upgrade itself without asking you and after that upgrade the error start to happen. I did not found a way to avoid this automatic google app update. It is clear a software bug between Google Play App and Cayin N5ii OS.

I hope that someone know a solution different than buying another android player, cause I was very satisfied with Cayin until this bug start to happening.

Thx.
Arne

This is exactly what i experienced from the start. Even audio priority doesnt help it.

We have received several reports regarding "Unfortunately, Google Play services has stopped" error message in past few days. We are gathering information and conducting our investigation. We might come back with followup questions so if you were approached to clarify the setup of your N5ii or data/time/events when encounter the error, please help us by share your situation with us.

The situation is most likely caused by an unannounced service adjustment from Google. The v3.5EN has been running smoothly for over 2 months, it is unlikely that a hidden bug will service suddenly in multiple locations. If we assume the firmware is not the root cause, we naturally focused on the Google service at the moment.

I also tried to search for solution on "Unfortunately, Google Play services has stopped" error message from other forum or portal. The Android Portal claimed that they can solve the problem, and there are other source offers slightly different solution, and you can find them here, here and here. Among these attempt, one common key step is to "Uninstalling updates of Google Play Store app". so maybe authorizing the Google Play to auto upgrade is one of the trigger.

I haven't tried this steps myself, but if you have run into this Google play problem already, and you are an experience users in Android Google service, maybe you can try these steps to see if they are applicable to N5ii. I have summarized the steps below but you want to read the full version, follow the Android Portal link I provided previously as I find them more reasonable and well-explained.

1. Deleting or clearing cache data
  • Go to the Applications under the Settings.
  • After going into Applications, go to Google Play Store app by going into All tab.
  • Tap on Clear data, Clear Cache and Force stop options.
  • Reopen Google Play Store app on your device and then you will show a new prompts window. After performing the above procedure, you have to restart or reboot your device.
2. Uninstalling updates Google Play Store app
  • Go to Settings and under the settings go to Applications.
  • Go to Google Play Store under the All tab.
  • In Google Play Store, click on the Uninstalling Updates option.
  • Restart your device.
3. Reset apps preferences
  • Go to Settings -> Application Manager
  • Tap Menu button
  • Tap on Reset app
  • Tap Reset app preference
4. Turn off apps from Download Manager
  • Go to the Application Manager by going into Settings.
  • In the Application Manager, swipe the display for 3 to 4 times from right to left side of the display.
  • After doing above step, you will see the Turned Off tab.
  • In the Turned Off tab, tap on the Download Manager option.
  • In Download Manager, you can see two options at the top of the page named Force stop and Turn on.
  • Click on the Turn On option.

From what i experienced, it starts happening when i turn on audio priority for long time and turn it off to use spotify and turn on wifi
For the record im using N5iiS, does the 1.3 firmware is roughly the same with standard N5ii's 3.5?

This is exactly what made me ask. The settings page doesnt include any pages whatsoever to fully control user's apps. At least we can do something related to data/cache of the google play to make it stop force stopping.
I dont quite sure the N5ii's hardware could handle any android apks you throw at it unlike -lets say- XDP300Rs with its Snapdragon 800

I'm still baffled why people are dropping hundreds of dollars on an audio player so they can stream music. Defeats the purpose.

I enjoy the simplicity and we-got-everything-you-want of music streaming, despite the lossy file whatsoever. The good thing on cayin's product theres almost no difference between spotify and downloaded songs other than loudness IMO, unlike onkyos and pioneers because android's limitations.

I do have a lot of own cd-ripped music and flacs in my library but still loving the versatility of music streamings.

Considering the problems people are having across multiple OEM devices with their offline libraries, I would hardly call it simple......

Plus you pay monthly so you can download a lossy file every x months. Why not just suck it and pay the lump sum for decent rip, you save money AND bandwidth. Unless the file is bad you're less likely to have issues playing than trying to get offline Spotify, Tidal etc.

As for Cayin players having no difference between source files and streamed files, Im not sure if I sure be worried. This implies one of 2 things: Either Cayin's software implementation is so good, that Android limitations are essentially a non factor or Cayin's hardware doesn't perform as well as Onkyo and would never hit the ceiling of performance. I have an N3 running as a USB DAC, so I certainly hope neither is the case

The Application page is available but the steps is a bit complicated, so I didn't share it previously. I should have mentioned it yesterday but that was 3am in the morning so I missed that, sorry for my negligence.

1. Swipe from left to right to pull out Application Menu, Select Third Party Application to enter Application Drawer, Click ES File Explorer to access Local Memory
Application Menu Step 01.JPG

2. Swipe Left or Right until you arrive the Homepage screen of ES File Explorer, select APK
Application Menu Step 02.JPG

3. Select User Apps at control area
Application Menu Step 03.JPG

4. Select System Apps from pop-up menu
Application Menu Step 04.JPG

5. You'll arrive at the App Manager page now, scroll up and down to find the app you need. In this case, you need to look for Google Play, Select and Hold the Google Play icon until the app is selected and an quick menu will display at the bottom of the screen, select "More"
Application Menu Step 05.JPG

Select Property from the pop up menu
Application Menu Step 06.JPG

You should arrive at the Application page of Google play, scroll down and you'll find the Clear Cache option.
Application Menu Step 07.JPG
Application Menu Step 08.JPG

Silvia (Cayin Support) has tried to clear the Cache but it won't stop the "Unfortunately, Google Play services has stopped" problem. This is expected because one of the page I quoted yesterday confirmed that they need to "Uninstalling updates of Google Play Store app" before the situation is getting better. We are now waiting for our Technical Service to conduct further investigation.

At the and of the day, its just about choice.

Ive used 2 Cayin DAPs and an XDP300R, i have to say the implementations are different. Cayin customize the Android experience in a way that it barely feels android, when the XDP barely customize so using it feels like a regular phone. Usability wise its better on XDP but sound wise there is degradation in sound when it comes to streaming.

This is all i need while waiting for a workaround. At least i can rollback the play service to the factory default temporarily to avoid resets from now and then because its kinda pain in the a to do so
