Cayin N5 DAP - Product Info (Post #2), Resources (Post #3) and Discussion

Nope Andykong. Bookmark "remembers" the exact position in a file, so it's good for audiobooks or long dj mixes where you want to get back to the exact position you left off even if you play another file in between. Make sense?

Pretty sure RockBox has this. iPods have it too, but it required changing the file from .m4a to .m4b.

I can understand your requirement now, but this seems to fit for certain work-related scenario rather then regular music listening. This is technically feasibility but not a priority items when consider the N5 are targeted at a more general purpose, we still have a long to-do list in our firmware plan thought, you can expect some breaking new from Cayin very soon. :D :D

Does it involves bigger fonts and accelerated scroll wheel? :)

Sorry, this announcement will not involve bigger fonts and accelerated scroll wheel of N5

Andy, do you want us to continue with guessing game?

Take your time to draft the release announcement.  Everybody is excited since it has been awhile.  From my experience of dealing with Cayin, you guys don't just release something out in the open and wait for user feedback beta testing the firmware, but rather take your time testing it internally to be sure.  That's why I'm (and everybody else) are excited to find out what's coming up!!!

Just hope that play/pause delay is eliminated ;)  I love power saving idea, but it should kick in after some short timeout rather than instantaneous when you hit the pause during playback.  Perhaps some updates to mitigate balanced output hissing as well, though my initial assessment of that was based on the early pre-production unit I used in my review (waiting to receive production quality N5 now, woo-hoo!!!)

Well, it probably will take a while before the gangs find out that the final answer is:

Sorry, this announcement will not involve N5

:D :D :D :D :D :D

Indeed we take a slightly different approach from others, we do it slowly, but we do it correctly. We might not be the most efficient party in terms of firmware upgrade, but we certainly take user suggestion seriously and SERVE our customers seriously. :beerchug:

Yes, need to recalibrate the battery to generate new set of Mohr-Coulomb parameters for more accurate battery capacity measurement and prediction, I'll recommend this for firmware revision consideration, but this will take time because we need to rely on the battery supplier, the N5 battery is a custom make battery, the factory tends to put this in lower priority because of the amount of battery units involved.

Good to hear, thanks Andy. Meanwhile, do you think subsequent use will somehow let the reading self-adjust again? Or really need firmware intervention?

A new Cayin product ???  Do we need to start saving for something?

Received my N6 yesterday and have a couple of hours on it.  First impressions,,,Very good seems to be slightly more open and more sound stage than the N5 need to do more listening but highs seem a little more prominent as well.  It is big and bulky and im a little dissapointed that the whole circular screen is not all screen but the biggest issue would seem to be battery life down to 72% after only 2 hours normal use.

Also paired it up with the oppo ha2 amp using line out and could really tell much of a difference.

All in all Im very impressed with the sound coming out of this.  Will let my brain burn in over the coming days and see how we go.

Well, will not involve N5 is a piece of information regarding N5, so I am in the right thread, if I stated that the announcement will involve N6, then I am in the wrong thread, I thought this is very logical, right? :D :D

Theoretically, lithium batteries devices contain a capacity gauge that can tell the amount of energy stored. However, this sensor tends to be inaccurate after several charging/discharging cycles, we can calibrate the gauge by doing a full discharge non-stop , followed by a also, non-stop, full charge. I have seen some battery expert recommend to recalibrate the battery gauge in every 30 discharge cycles,

Maybe you can try this and see if the battery readings become more linear across usage, I doubt this is the main cause, but there is no harm to try.

Regarding the battery reading, since we have no idea on the previous usage pattern and condition of the player, I suggest you conduct a battery gauge calibration by charge up the player first, followed by a deep discharge, and finally a full charge up, you can also measure the total hour of usage during the discharge, that is the best indicator to the condition of your N6 battery.

I like the line out of N6, and that is one of the features that makes N6 stand out when compare to the more compact N5. Give it more time, and I am sure N6 will win the heart of headfiers so pursue audio performance as their first priority.

A small tidbit ...

Today, a friend of mine were singing praises for a combo he just tried, L5Pro + VentureCraft SounDroid Vantam, mentioning that the Vantam made the L5Pro sounds really good, and he wanted me to hear it. After 1 min of listening, I told him if he can do a blind test and tell me which is which; he accepted.

For the first setup, I used the L5Pro+Vantam combo. After 30s or so, he said switch ...

For the second setup, I (sneakily) used the Cayin N5. After 30s or so, he said stop...

I asked him which is which and he replied, 1st setup is without the Vantam and 2nd setup is with Vantam ...

Lesson learned:

1) A huge win for N5!!! He preferred it over L5Pro+Vantam (which he prefers over the vanilla L5Pro), subjectively of course...
2) The differences between mid-fi and hi-fi setup is not so huge, to the point that one may not be able to tell the differences at all :)

In anycase, coming from the L5Pro+Vantam, he conceded that N5 is a very good sounding DAP...

... but he still don't like how it looks, LOL :)
