I enjoyed the trip to Canjam London again – a great pleasure to meet and chat with old and new head-fi friends and exhibitors.
The beauty of headphones is that it is completely personal choice. You can find what works for you regardless of what others prefer.
We all have different experiences of music as a reference. For headphone listening, I use the MrSpeakers Voce with my build of KG’s Blue Hawaii design.
The personal audio market has grown so much over recent years and so much interesting stuff has appeared. I listened briefly to quite a few phones and the following are just a few things I would be keen to hear more of.
(First I must apologise for not having photos to post –next year I will take pics)
The RAAL requisite really impressed me. I loved the music through them. (Having had ribbon tweeters in speakers I am always interested to see them in other applications.)
The RAAL requisite are for me a top reproducer of music. They are ergonomically different and will be expensive, but I’d like to see these gain a place in the market. Other unusual ones have done so. (BTW They run off a power amp not a low power headphone amp.)
An excellent solution to the ambient noise of these audio shows was provided by Warwick Acoustics with the acoustic booth, which provided much improved listening environment while still being in with the action.
Last year I was very taken with the Sonoma M1 and had the pleasure of an extended audition.

I was very keen to hear the new Aperio and it didn’t disappoint. It is a real high-end electrostatic solution. On a 5 minute listen in the “pod” the sound is great, comfort is very good, the system is neat, has the advantages I mentioned in the impressions of the M1 and has solved all of the drawbacks of the M1. The M1 could not force me to give up my existing hard-won system, but the new Aperio could certainly be a challenger (if it wasn’t so costly). For the wealthy music lover this is a great offering.
Likewise the AMT derived HEDD has a good musical sound but is also ergonomically challenged due to being rather heavy at the moment but wait to see how it comes out after further development.
Another item of interest was the tiny Woo audio portable battery powered valve amp and driving some more unusual open phones, upstairs in a separate room. Added Edit: I was running out of time so only a quick listen in the Woo room. Was struck by the sound and beautiful design of the WOO WA7 Fireflies, the portable was the WA8 Eclipse and the unusal phones the Mysphere 3.
I was also surprised by the difference the Synergisitc Research headphone cables made to the MrSpeakers on the Electromod stand. Not applicable to my MrS Voce electrostatics though.
So much to see - so many interesting enthusiasts. Good show!
